Jim Cummins, a well respected researcher, believed in the importance of a relationship between the home language and the new language being learned. Linguistic interdependence means that both langauges work together to achieve the best outcomes. He believed that the first language should not be abandoned before it is fully developed, instead the knowledge and abilities being built up in learning the native language can be leveraged to gain proficiency in the second language. What he saw was that students who gave up on their first language did not achieve success in learning English as well as students who kept both languages.

To develop his theories Cummins asked the questions: " What level of second language competence must the child possess to benefit from instruction in that language?" and "Do children who maintain and develop their first language in school develop higher or lower second language levels of skills than those whose first language is replaced by a second language?" (Cummins 227)
