The south began to fear that they would lose their slaves, so they became enraged.

The proclamation declared that "all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free.”  The Emancipation Proclamation affected the Civil war by increasing the North’s will to win the war.

On the evening of April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. This was only 5 days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House.
