Struggling to teach mixed-ability learners?!

Teaching mixed-ability learners is a common hurdle in different classrooms faced by most English teachers, including me, nowadays. This talk will share my exploratory action research in which I uncovered the hidden problems my students with varied proficiency levels face in a class and implemented effective ways to provide better English lessons suitable to all students.

I feel that now I can find lower-ability students who struggle to be engaged in my lessons.

I found out that only by providing additional lessons for students with problems can we achieve progress in ESL lessons.
I began additional sessions for those students, and within 1 month, we could see improvement in the level of engagement and in accomplishing tasks.
I am still providing additional lessons till I make all the students improve.

FEEDBACK from a classroom observation

A teacher observed my lessons thoroughly and noticed that the tasks and exercises given by me do not suit the level of some students, which made it difficult for them to be engaged in my lesson.

Additionally, she noted that I, as a teacher, should work more on interaction between students.

With the help of anonymous questionnaires and interviews, I could discover the real challenges my pupils have been facing in my lessons, such as

losing concentration,
not being able to understand the tasks fully
and less support from their upper-level classmates.

What I realized in my work with students is that sometimes i haven't been noticing lower-ability students and worked only with those who were engaged in my lesson, which has caused a big problem in students' engagement in my lessons.
