     One of the things I like the most about the giver is that it focuses on real life problems effecting me, you, and others across the way. 
 Children and the effects they have for example seemed to have had a major effect on how the book works. 
     Children seemed to be looked at as a prize and they were taken for granted.  You were chosen to be a birth mother and to bring children into this world. Children in the giver had a special ceremony every year and every year they were granted with a prize until the end of their childhood. And when they reach the end the chief elder says "Thank you for your childhood."  
     It is when all of the children have become of age the parents leave to go to the house of old. 
    I've come to believe that the author made this point about children because maybe her childhood was better than adulthood. Also, maybe it is her perspective that one you have become at a certain age in life it after your children have done well.
     I don't understand however why they gave power to children as well as they did the elders.

     However, the theme i found the most important was the importance of memory to human society. If this theme wasn't in the book, the book wouldn't be the same. 
      In my opinion the whole book is based off of the lack of memory to the characters. The characters had no memory of color, diversity, holidays, weather, parents of parents, music, and much more.
     If they had memories their society would be much different. They would kill the little children or the old. They wouldn't take pills to stop feelings, they would embrace their natural feelings. 
I personally think if we didn't have memories we would be just like them. We would have no clue of the life we were missing. No clue we were missing out on feelings and the compassion and interest life holds. I feel we would be just like Rosemary and not realize that we were killing ourselves and how easy it was for us to do it.

They have no memory of a kiss, of feelings, nothing of the sort. How do they know that the pills would stop the feelings.
I also question how they have no memory of the past or the imperfections, yet they kept killing. They changed the name. The actual action is still there.
