handwritten letters and fountain pen cursive. That made me think of war, and all the consequences that go along with it. I chose watercolors as one of my mediums because I haven't really worked with watercolors before and I wanted to give it a shot; I really like how watercolors look, and I thought it could give me the vibes I was going for. What artistic struggles did you learn from?  As you pursue art for pleasure or maybe even as a future career, what subjects or new approaches would you like to try?
This year I think I really improved with using color in my artwork; before this class I typically only worked in black and white when I was doing traditional art, saving color for digital because it's far easier to get the perfect color without too much thinking when you're drawing in a program like Photoshop. I really explored how colors interact with each other in all of the projects we did, with the chair project in particular pushing me to figure out what colored pencils combine to make the colors I want. That's another thing I improved with– I usually don't use colored pencils because I never quite understood how they blended and what undertones I needed to get what colors, and I think the chair project helped with that. I've come to love charcoal too, and how loose and relaxing it can be to draw with. I also grew in my use and quality of watercolor (though that could be due in part to the fact that I was no longer using pans like I do at home), and it's gone from one of my least favorite mediums to at least in the top three. Watercolor also taught me patience, because if you try to get everything done quickly the colors blur together and eventually just form an unappealing brown. I also learned that charcoal and oil pastel are not friends, and if I'm ever doing a mixed media project they should not be next to each other.
