The LiveScribe Smart Pen has the appearance of a standard pen, but simultaneously records lecture content while it writes using a small, built-in microphone. Using the corresponding LiveScribe paper, users are able to tap anywhere in their written notes to hear what was being said at the time that they wrote them. The pen also has the ability to convert hand-written notes to a digital version on an electronic device using bluetooth.

UDL Guidelines and Checkpoints Supported:
1. Multiple means of representation - provide options for perception - offer ways for customizing the display of information (1.1) - Using a smart pen for lecture note-taking allows for students to access notes in a hand-written format, via the pen's recording, or through the digital copy uploaded using bluetooth technology.
2. Multiple means of representation - options for perception - offer alternatives for auditory information (1.2) - Auditory information in a lecture setting is not accessible for all learners in the moment it is delivered. Allowing for the recording of auditory information using a smart pen gives students the opportunity to manipulate it later as they wish, and replaying it as much as necessary to meet their unique processing needs.
3. Multiple means of representation - options for language and symbols - illustrate through multiple media (2.5)
4. Multiple means of action and expression - options for physical action - optimize access to tools and assistive technologies (4.2)
5. Multiple means of action and expression - options for expression and communication - use multiple tools for construction and composition (5.2)

College level science courses can be incredibly dense in lecture content, which makes them challenging for many students of varying ability levels. These courses tend to be formatted as a long lecture where there is a powerpoint at the front of the room and a professor speaking for the duration of the class. For students with learning disabilities or slower processing speeds, these courses can be extremely challenging - a smart pen has the potential, though, to allow students the opportunity to access their lecture content a many times as they need to in order to achieve comprehension and retention.
