Take a Hike!

Blueberry Mountain:
The Blueberry Mountain hike is an easy 2.4 mile stroll in Weld, Maine that the locals take every summer to get a taste of Maine's famous wild blueberries. The forests in Weld are especially scenic in the fall, and the sparsely populated town makes for a peaceful hike.

West Quoddy Head Coastal Trail:
The West Quoddy Head Trail located in West Quoddy Head State Park is an easy 1.3 mile hike that’s more like a walk along the beach. However, the beach is a rocky one and the path takes you along sights of treacherous cliffs and rock formations sure to ignite a sense of adventure in you. If not those, then maybe the whales that many see while hiking this trail will. This trail leads straight to the easternmost point in the United States which also happens to be the sight of the Quaddy Head Light, an old lighthouse. So, take a walk on the coast and then enjoy your well-earned spot at the edge of the country.

Witch Hole Loop:

Witch Hole Loop is a trail located in Acadia National Park that is actually best suited for winter due to its tendency to keep away large summer crowds. It is, as its name suggests, a 3.3-mile loop trail that becomes a scenic stroll through a winter wonderland when the crystalline snow drapes itself over the trees, turning all the green to a pure white.

100 Mile Wilderness:

The 100 Mile Wilderness trail in Monson is fairly self-explanatory. Stretching 99.4 miles and covering all means of Maine's heavily varying terrain, including lakes, waterfalls, mountains, and of course, mud, the 100 Mile Wilderness is said to be "the most remote section on the Appalachian Trail." It's not for everybody, but rather for the dedicated rigorous adventurer. Most hikers carve out 8-10 days to make the trip through the wilderness, factoring in time to enjoy themselves and be immersed in the nature, wildlife, and lakes.

Becker, Kraig.
Do go chasing waterfalls!

Little do many know, but within the dense forests and wild greenery so characteristic of Maine, hide dozens of majestic waterfalls. If you know where to look, you can find one around almost every corner it seems. Many locals and tourists alike hike to waterfalls during the spring or summer to sightsee or to splash around. Some waterfalls have large weak current pools that people swim in for relief in the sweltering heat, and some of the natural algae on the rocks even serve as waterslides! Overall, Maine’s waterfalls are certainly a hidden gem and can be immensely enjoyable once you find them. Below are ten of my personal favorites that I have hiked to and that you can find on a map if you want to visit them as well! Some require a bit of a hike but nothing too deterring. Below in the column I have posted pictures of nearly all the waterfalls I have listed below:

Angel Falls

Dunn Falls

Grand Falls

Gulf Hagas

Houston Brook Falls

Katahdin Stream Falls

Moxie Falls

Screw Auger Falls

Smalls Falls

Step Falls

"10 Most Scenic Waterfalls in Maine." Maine Vacations. http://www.etravelmaine.com/top-ten/waterfalls-in-maine/.

Acadia National Park:

One of my favorite things about Maine is its national park, Acadia National Park. A wide, expansive mass of land that encompasses rolling forests on the side of majestic mountains, geometric rock formations along a thrashing coastline, and dense woods that hide lakes and waterfalls. Just taking a drive through it and stopping every once in a while - to step out and feel the strong winds that blow though the valleys, to find yourself on top of the world, or just to take a breath of clear, unpolluted air - is a liberating experience. Acadia has many hiking trails that range in difficulty and are quite popular in the summer. If you're interested in more organized activities, the park also hosts many different kinds of tours that can be taken by bike, boat, bus, or carriage; activities such as birdwatching, horse riding, tide pooling, and skiing in the winter among countless other things. The park also holds special activities specifically for kids. You can make Acadia a day trip or stay for a night or three on their campground or in the lodges they have in the park.

Quoddy Head State Park:

Quoddy Head is a great state park that also has a wide variety of terrain similar to Acadia. Five hundred forty-one acres of trails, woodlands, cliffs and bluffs, and plenty of coast for everyone to enjoy. In fact, animal watching is a common pastime among those who spend their time on the coasts of Quoddy Head. Many kinds of whales and seabirds can reportedly be observed frequently there. Also, the Quoddy Head Light in Quoddy Head State Park, which has been standing for centuries, is classified as the easternmost point of the contiguous United States and is a famous historical spot that is popular among tourists. Quoddy Head also offers activities such as birdwatching and hunting.

"Acadia: National Park Maine." National Park Service. https://www.nps.gov/acad/index.htm.

"Quoddy Head State Park." Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. https://www1.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/doc/parksearch/index.pl?search_radio=1&state_park=10&historic_site=&public_reserved_land=&shared_use_trails=&town=&distance=&submit=Go+%BB.

Mars Hill (in Maine!)

Mars Hill is one of the few places in the entirety of the U.S. that is very near and dear to my heart. Mars Hill is a ski hill that rests at the edge of the quiet town of Mars Hill. The thing that is special about Mars Hill is that it rests right at the border of Maine and Canada, and even more interesting is the fact that it is the first place the light of the rising sun touches the U.S. every day. The unpolluted air and sprawling greenery that stretches for miles that is visible from the top of the hill makes for one spectacular sunrise. So, if you want the whole show, plan on getting to the hill in time to start climbing it at around 4 in the morning. It's a steep hill, so wear appropriate clothing and shoes, and it's almost always cold very early in the morning no matter the season, so bring jackets, blankets, and maybe a warm drink. After all the hard work is done, all you have to do is sit back as the striking and vivid oranges and reds of the sunrise wash over you and then the whole country. An additional bonus is that the end of the Appalachian Trail is very near! So, after you are done basking in the sunrise, you could actually hike briefly to the very end or head back down to the town and get a warm breakfast at the Appalachian Trail Cafe in Millinocket. There, you will likely catch a glimpse of one or more hikers who are celebrating their feat of hiking the Appalachian Trail and receiving the accolades they so deserve.
