The War with Mexico all started with Texas and Mexico. Polk was now president of the union, and has avoided going into war with Britain over Oregon when there was a bigger problem, which was Texas and Mexico. The annexation of Texas and allowing it to be a slave state angered Mexico, who saw this as an act of war, for they saw Texas as a land that's still theirs. Another reason why Texas and Mexico were angry at each other was the fact that they couldn't agree on the borders of Texas, the disagreement being one of the means to call war. Polk tried to end this dispute calmly by sending an ambassador that will go to Mexico and promise to pay Texas for Mexico, but it sadly failed. After the attack on April 25, 1846, Congress then declared war on Mexico, making it official.
However, Americans had different feelings about the claim for war. Abraham Lincoln questioned Polk's claim of war. Northeasters questioned the amount of people that could die as a result of this war while the South saw this as an opportunity to expand slavery to the west. Slavery then became an issue in the debates over war. The representatives against slavery then immediately made a bill to prevent more expansions of slavery.
The U.S. were led by well trained officers during the war, but the Mexican Army was much larger. Despite being outnumbered, America was able to gain New Mexico and California without much violence. General Taylor battled in the north to go farther down south of Mexico while General Winfield Scott fought in the south, toward Mexico City, therefore being the invasion in Mexico. In September 1847, Mexico City fell to Scott, allowing America to win the war.
On February 2, 1848, the war came to an end with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Also, in the Mexican Cession, Mexico gave up a vast region in the far west, including areas like California along with Texas. In return, America promised to pay back to Mexico. The ones left in what was before Mexican territory saw that they had to adapt and become one of the minorities.

I once saw myself as a citizen of Mexico, yet now I am an American as a result of the Mexican War. It was a very brutal war, for I saw the deaths of many who fought bravely. I never knew that now I am in a strange place, where languages, culture, and legal system are very different, ones that I must adapt to in order to live here. The Americans here are very interested in farming and slaves to do that farming. I have taught them my own ways, and they have taught me theirs. The war changed all of us for better or for worse, but America is growing bigger, and all must watch out.

I am glad that the war has finally be won, for now there is more land for farming and therefore, profit. There are also rumors that California is full of gold, and many Americans such as myself want to see if that it true. Our manifest destiny is to continue to expand and prosper, no matter what or who comes in our way. I know that my brother is bringing slaves in as well in hopes to have more slave states to get more power in Congress. I do not own as many slaves as him, but I do see the war as beneficial, for the land is rich for farming. However, this came at a great cost, for one of my cousins fought in the war and never came back to us.
