The Maxim gun was a weapon invented by American-British inventor Hiram Stevens Maxim in 1883: it was the first recoil-operated machine gun. It has been called the weapon most associated with the British imperial conquest, and likewise was used in colonial wars by other countries between 1886–1914. But according to another website, the maxim machine gun was mad to prevent war from happening.

How does the Maxim Gun function?

The basic design consists of 10 barrels positioned within the large cylinder visible on the gun. Each barrel had its own breech and firing pin system, allowing for multiple shots to be fired in succession as the barrels pass the magazine feed at the top of the cylinder. The barrels were revolved by a hand crank on the side of gun, which would also make the barrels fire as they passed by the ammunition feed via a groove that would pull the pin back and release it into the cartridge, firing the bullet. Once the barrel reaches the bottom of the cylinder, the empty shell would be removed via an ejection port.

How did the Maxim Gun affect the design of modern firearms?

The self-loading design of the Maxim gun heavily influenced the creation of other heavy machine guns and self-loading firearms as a whole, including the creation of the Thompson submachine gun in 1918. Without the invention of the maxim, most firearms these days would consist of simple, manually loaded (e.g. bolt action, pump action firearms) rifles and firearms.
