A mother in any person's life is such an essential part of life in general. My mom is one of the caring, loving, self sacrificing person you will meet. She was my best friend at some point of my life. We’d go to parks, travel around Nepal dodging monkeys, eating street food. She would always find a way to make me smile no matter what. Any situation she could make better. So when she got breast cancer, I was around 13. How could she make this situation better? I could see her smile faltering everyday, the glow in her eyes dimming, and her going out less and less often. Me and my sister would crouch behind the door, squeezing our ears close to make out the hushed conversations between my mom and dad. Even through this time, she found ways to cook for us, leaving us food for when we got home from school. She would be napping, exhausted but still managed to greet us with love and food that our trusty microwave could reheat. One time I overheard talking to dad, in a hushed tone she whispered in Nepali “I can’t die, not when I have to take care of Sakcham and Suhasi.''. My stomach dropped, a mix of emotion felt lodged in my throat. She couldn’t care less about herself, she wanted herself alive just for us. My view of her changed after that, sure even before I had respect for her as our mother. But from then I saw her as some kind of superhero. Death, the most feared situation, was brushed aside by my mom for the sake of us.

Have you seen those reality shows with dozens of children? I’m grateful I’m not part of those families; while family is family I would consider 12 of suhashi’s something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. My younger sister Suhashi, is thankfully my only sibling and is 13. When I was her age; I considered one of the most annoying, pestering kids in the world. Always running her mouth about anything I did which was remotely bad. Anywhere I had to be with her; I would avoid. However, one day when I did particularly horrible on a test, the reaction at home wasn’t the best. I sat on the ground, a sinking feeling seemed to be swallowing me whole. My sister came up to me, and sat there. Bringing me water, and patting my back. At first I was infuriated who she thought she was. But looking at her I did realize that she changed, the toothy smile was now replaced with a set of whites. Her small unicorn shirts were replaced with hoodies. Her once nasally voice was now deeper. I think that moment changed our relationship. The time I spent resenting her, I didn’t realize that she was growing up as well. Even now my relationship with her has gotten better, she’s my accomplice, my errand running partner, my trash throwing buddy. Life with her taught me many things, to cherish the moments you have with people before they run out and that life is better with a second person.

My dad is one of the most hardworking people you will meet. Sure that’s a common phrase but I’ll sure when work is necessary my dad does 150% of what’s needed and with joy. I always admired that about him But never not to spend time with him much, since he was out working hard for the future of me and my sister. I feel as if growing up rather then really knowing him, I had this idea of him that I idolized.

The mom of Aayush and Ayaan is Aki aunty. The A name runs in their whole family. To be honest I was very much intimidated by her at first, she ruled her kids with an iron fist. Her eyes narrowed when her kids did something wrong. I was scared she would yell at me, which she never did. Only out of love. As I’ve mentioned before, her place is my second home I know all the little quirks about it. How to press the kitchen door so it shuts, how there’s a small place in the garage where you can play, and the small light switch behind the fridge. She would always text me reminding me to come eat if she knew I liked the food she was making. Eve at my graduation she made me a homemade money necklace. I don’t think I’ve realixed until how much of an impact she truly had on me.

Rohan is someone I would consider family to me. We met in the 6th grade being both nepali and scrawny teenagers. It was fate. I found myself getting closer and closer to him. Constantly talking to him about my 6th grade interests and playing sports afterschool with him. We both had younger sisters, both had nepali parents and both grew up similarly. He wasn’t just a friend, I would consider him a brother to me. If I didn’t meet him in 6th grade I don’t know what kind of person i would now become.

Naming child is a pretty big deal meaning the person naming the child had to be . And she was a pretty big deal to me. She was my dads big brothers wife and she had found the perfect name for me. You know the feeling when you can’t decide a better name for you then the one you already have. In Nepal she was my go to. I would spend afternoons with my cousins roaming in the fields. And i can asure you she always took care of me. If I didn’t have her I don’t know what kind of people and what definition I would have of family.
