Caitlin Sally Bianca

#3

Emotions play a huge role in decision-making related to mental health. Our emotional state influences how events are perceived. Being in a depressed state allows for negative perceptions that further the vicious circle of negative thoughts. Emotions are important as a signal to show us whether something is wrong and we need to take care of ourselves. This will be very helpful in measuring our emotion quotient by reflecting upon our feelings to understand and become aware of our possible triggers, thus developing better coping mechanisms. It will definitely make a person resilient and will eventually help in sound decision-making. The understanding of self emotionally helps us gel with others around us. It also allows others to be forthcoming with their problems as relates to mental health. However, a fine balance needs to be drawn between emotional insight and rational thinking lest our judgment gets clouded by emotions.

Alicia & Chloe

5) Among the stress-reduction strategies mentioned in the article, I find that cultivating an attitude of gratitude and doing creative work are especially helpful to me. By focusing on the positive aspects of my life instead of the tensions in my life, expressing gratitude helps me feel connected and fulfilled. Similar to this, engaging in artistic endeavors gives me a creative outlet through which I may express my emotions, improving my mood and mental health in general. Due to varying values and beliefs, different cultures may see these tactics through different lenses. societies that value community and collectivism, for instance, can emphasize connections as a means of expressing gratitude, whereas individualistic societies might emphasize individual accomplishments and artistic self-expression. This discrepancy emphasizes how context is crucial for mental health strategies.

3) Emotions play a pivotal role in helping us direct our daily lives. More positive emotions lead to more positive decisions as there are more bright ideas or connotations in one's head and negative ones likewise. This affects the way we make decisions about our mental health. Being in a more positive mindset will encourage change in terms of self care and more, but in a negative one, many may not know how to cope, ask for help, and bottle their feelings up. Our emotions are the reflection of our mental health and by evaluating how they react we can understand ourselves more.

When one ever gets denied for help, this forms a mental barrier where whenever the issue ever occurs again, they assume it is just overreacting and not go get help.

5) The stress management technique from the second article that I find most useful would be taking a tech break. I constantly use technology in my time, which has formed a dangerous habit. This is why I believe preventing myself just for 15 minutes where I stop using my phone would allow me to reflect and become productive. However, other cultures that do not rely on these technologies may view these strategies as useless.

Belief in mental health care can significantly impact whether individuals seek help; those who trust in its effectiveness are more likely to reach out for support, while disbelief may lead to avoidance or a feeling of embarrassment when mentioning it. This skepticism can stem from cultural attitudes, personal experiences, or misinformation, resulting in individuals feeling hesitant or ashamed to pursue necessary treatment. They believe that they can solve the issues on their own, which could potentially worsen the situation in the long run. Example, in the article it mentions a middle-school student that often received bullying and set fire to the school due to built up frustration and lack of proper health care.

If parents don't believe their children have mental health issues, they would not seek help because to them it would only mean wasting money, time, and effort. On the contrary,

5. Sleeping better and taking deep breaths. Knowing that I had enough sleep during the night helps me with my mood for the whole day. Instead of waking up cranky, I wake up in a good mood that also motivates me to go to school and learn. There are ways that help me fall asleep faster and better such as taking time off screen for a while before falling asleep. Looking at screens right before falling asleep can interrupt the process of falling asleep by making it longer. The other way that is beneficial for myself is taking a deep breath. The 4-4-8 breathing has been really helpful in calming myself down. When I have anxiety, my heartbeat increases significantly, which results in feeling uncomfortable. This method helps me to relax very quickly and clears my mind. Moreover, this method helps counterbalance our fight or flight stress response and also lowers our blood pressure. This deep breath method would be most useful when you have anxiety right before an event, and you don't have a lot of time on your hands.

This is due to how emotions can entirely take up our thinking and cause us to make rational, but usually irrational decisions to solve how to contend with any mental problems that are being faced. Positive emotions can motivate proactive health decisions, while negative emotions like fear or shame might delay seeking support. Understanding and regulating our emotions will help us to better recognize mental health issues and encourage more empathetic and effective care.

I personally find sleeping better to be the most useful since a good deep sleep will really rejuvenate anyone and cause them to forget of any minor mental illnesses and problems. A lot of teenagers in Indonesia also faces complex pressure in their adolescence phase where they are vulnerable to face both school and home-related problems . However, almost 19.2% did not know where to seek service, and 43.8% intentionally did not want to seek any help. Other than that, only 16.7 % caregivers and parents admit that they've met their children's needs with their mental health. These facts show that a lot of children need help and easily accessible services such as telephone networks to help them with mental health issues. However, Indonesia has lacking nubers of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists, childrens in Indonesia to have the tendency to keep their problems to themselves and eventually face harder time coping with their mental health.

Audrey E, Celine, Chloe

3) Emotions can both improve and hinder our decisions about mental health. On one hand, emotions give us signals about our current mental state and the problems we are facing. For example, if we are feeling extremely anxious, our emotions tell us that we need to solve certain problems and pay attention to certain issues. As a result, we are able to seek out the help we need. On the other hand, when we are overwhelmed, strong negative emotions may push us to make irrational decisions such as engaging in illicit drug use or temporary distractions to take our minds off the problems we are facing. As a result, there needs to be a delicate balance in using our emotions to make decisions about our mental health.

4) In the case of relationships between families, parents being unable to accept that their children have these issues can cause tensions to arise between. Family members and the affected children may even feel resentment towards them. In more extreme cases, children may completely cut off communication with their family. When mental health is stigmatized, feelings such as shame and embarrassment cause individuals to be wary of seeking professional help. Communities that stigmatize mental health and regard mental health issues as "fake issues" discourage people from validating their own mental health problems. Additionally, due to shame and the fear of stigmatization from coworkers or friends, individuals may not be willing to share their experiences and never seek treatment. They feel that they are overreacting to problems in their lives and therefore push down these negative emotions. Nevertheless, this behavior is extremely dangerous as the buried problems will eventually resurface and cause a lot of disruption in people's lives. Moreover, the stigmatization against mental health issues means that there is a lack of mental health services within the community as well. There will be few people willing to help out those with mental health issues and even fewer that will seek out help. Overall, disbelief will only result in an individual refusing to seek treatment.

The article also states that mental health services in Java are still quite limited, and especially in areas outside of Java, that is why, looking for counsel, psychiatrists, and even psychologists is very hard. Even in most cases, some socio-cultural barriers like the mindset of 'asking help = weak' exists, and even when people try to ask help, maybe from their parents, the parents would deny it, and brush it off.

In most cases, teenagers, children, and people with mental health issues who do not get or is denied of proper support usually go to really unhealthy ways of solving it.

Emotions are a fundamental part of humans, and can go both ways. Beneficial, and problematic. In many ways, our emotions can help us understand, but at times can cause decisions about our mental health

Emotions such as fear, shame, and denial usually cause people to not want to talk about their problems because they fear it'll make them look weak, and the shame of looking weak also exists. Not just that, being in denial makes them push away those problems even when they are approached about these problems. However, gratitude, and self compassion according to the article is proven to help understand our mental health, being in joy, being in happiness helps us sort out what causes our mental problems, what our weaknesses are, and it helps us understand who we are.
