working on good and bad representations, for good and bad representations of things we made a short film of a character who would try to act hard around his friends but would fail when acting hard around his friends and really he just felt very lonely.

REFLECTION

We were told to record someone in a positive and a negative light and make a character based on that

Our positive representation of the character showed how he felt like an outsider as part of the group he was in and we did this using several high angle shows

The negative representation of the character is the way he dresses as he looks like a roadman and his friends who are not nice to him in anyway and we did this by having him always looking up on them and always being in low angles speaking to them.

In the edit I want to focus on adding in music which helps shows how depressed he may feel and some colour grading to add darkness to shot that might have been a little to bright.

All of this did work but we also decided to get some pickup shots since we needed to make sure that everything would look right and certain shots that were filmed are too dark and none of the actors can be seen as an ND filter was left on at the time when recording.

For my documentry i have always had the idea of doing something that was to do with foreign affairs and working with other countries and things like war where you are showing people as they are stuck in dangerous situations and helping to convey the danger that they are in.

https://studentssolihullac-my.sharepoint.com/:f:/g/personal/blu22005835_students_solihull_ac_uk/ElqUJSNYvvlNvJVPHB1VGvkBPVdsz2PIIiQ-RXyd4EQclA?email=BLU22005835%40students.solihull.ac.uk&e=msgYb7 This link goes to all of my work on onedrive and all of the powerpoints i have done

New script for my documentary – music: the cutthroat tune of an
industry
A group of students going to a music course as they all aspire to
become artists and join such a competitive industry
Act 1- introduce our musician as a drummer, detail how he got into the
industry, give a brief history of the genre he Is going into. Show the
people in. The industry and how competitive some of this can be. Show
the particular goals he may have at that point. Show how hard this
industry is and show some of the troubles that may have plagued some
people in this industry
questions I am going to ask in my documentary
Have them start of by saying there name and then that they are a musician.

Questions I am going to as in my documentary interview:

How did you get into music

How long have you been doing it

Does it ever cause any stress

What was your highest moment

What is the biggest gig you have coming up this year

Explain your type of music that you listen too

Ask about the song they are doing for there gig (didn’t realise they were doing different ones)

Act 2 – introduce our second musician, the guitarist , detail his history in the business and how I was involved in it shows old footage of him playing with his old band. Do a shot where I pick up the guitar ask the same question to all the musicians

My documentary is participortary documentary on music students therefore I will have a big role in it and it will show the cutthroat music industry, I am hopefully going to show the history of the genre they want to go into which is rock in act 1 and begin to introduce the members of the band. We are going to dive into the drummer first and discuss his life and how he got into the industry and what he aspires to be in the industry

In act 2 I will move onto introducing the second member of the band who is the guitarist. I am going to show the history he has in the industry and work to use a lot of footage from when he was younger and therefore showing a lot of when I was younger as well.

In act 3 I will finally work on the bass guitarist who is the newest to music and has begun working towards music and diversifying what he play in the music industry. In this act is when the final resolution of there music concert and the music they are playing.

I am inspired to do this by Drive to Survive, a Netflix documentary which focus' on the formula one industry and uses a lot of the same interview shooting as I am using in my documentary. This also goes into the life of a formula one driver and is shot in the same way as my documentary is having someone behind the camera talking and then the interviewee responding to the questions.

For the documentary shown below I think that it has went really well. There are a few things that have definitely evolved over time and it is nice to see this idea blossom from being the small idea for only this unit to move into being probably the biggest project ive done and directed ever. With that it has come with challenges as in the interviews I had at first struggled to come up with questions for my interviewer and had struggled with lighting as i had made my interviewee look very bleached and not look alright so he definitely needed alot of colour-grading. Thankfully this is something I managed to do very quickly and I managed to make him not look as pale and and brought some detail back into his face which was very useful. I also think I did very well when it came to the microphones because I was able to have everyone be heard clearing and not have much background noise that could stop everything and make it grainy. During this I also wanted to get the full authenticity of my interviewee and that seems to have been a resounding sucess cause as the camera was there he seems to have gotten very comfortable with the surrounding which made his interview much easier and let me get his real emotion out of it.

With this I was looking for the characteristic's of a participatory documentary and I wanted to be involved as myself when I was doing the documentary and I think this went well because all though im not in the documentary you can here me and you can hear me and Kieren bouncing jokes of each over and see us actually having some sort of chemistry. I tried to convey the context of my documentary by showing the history of the band and having clips from the past of kieren that helped out and I plan to use more of them as I have decided that this is act 1 and I want to continue this up to my FMP.

When it comes to sound I have spoken on the audio i have recorded but I also want to add music after the fact and I have decided to use the song they are performing at there gig which is Heat Above by Greta Van Vleet. With this song it links is even more context as this song is the hardest and the one they could screw up so I feel it links into the documentary much more.

Now I know there is a lot I need to improve on. I decided during the edit to scrap the music as it took away from the documentary. I also have now realised that although I had alot of footage I can work with. I feel when it comes to piecing it together it lost all its weight when it came together and I hope to address that fact as I continue to film this documentary until my fmp where I want to piece it together as a feature length documentary. I also want to organise my time better when it comes to the documentary as I feel I have definitely messed up on the timing aspect of my documentary and I could of moved faster with where I was at in my documentary and made it more sense and made it play off much better. I hope these are things I can improve on but overall I think this has potential, I just need to manage it better in the coming months

1 communication skills\

organisation skills.

time management

active listening (paying attention to what people have said

problem solving skills

Today I filmed the interview and the back in music for my documentaries Act 1 and i think it went well. When on set I decided the use the lights and break one convention which was that I wanted a big shadow almost showing the darkness of the music industry in the shadows that back the set and showing a darker side that exists. I used a lav microphone and several lights so I could get the best lighting possible for the interview and I also worked on some B roll that will work beside the A roll of the documentary. The main one is the song that the drummer will be doing at the concert in November. I think it went well but I was given some information by a tutor who said in my next one i should have one light higher in strength than the other. during this I also decided to film an introduction and a second introduction for if the first idea does not work out. For it I recorded in the recording studio a piece that can be played over the intro and used for the recording of my introduction to play if the audio does not turn out well

after this i also worked on some B roll that I am planning to use for my documentary of the drummer playing three different songs on the drums which i can use to show some of him playing and not all just staring at him.

Now I have begun to edit this work and did some slight colour grading to make the skin look a little warmer and more human. I have also matched the audio which sounds amazing and done some cutting to get rid of the stuff thats not needed for the interview. I also had a brilliant idea while filming this and now I will only be doing act 1 at the moment and as June and July rolls around Act 2 and 3 will come together as my FMP with the new idea showing them get a music video made after the first concert show as the three of them begin to work on there ideas for the main concert as in act three we have moved onto the a FMP and its time to go for there FMP until the end where its left on a cliffhanger for the end

I also plan to film tomorrow and when I film tomorrow i want to be able to get my lighting a little better and really just follow around my interviewee having a look at what he is doing for the day and what he is planning for the day and how he is managing to make something that can be linked to the other songs that are being played at the gig and how he makes his music how he stays in time with everyone else. I want to use a mixture of wide angles and close up of the sticks hitting the drums maybe some close ups of the guitar aswell. I want to make everything look like the audience is completely involved with what is being shot and what is going on with the performance itself.

For my research I looked at several documentaries but mainly participatory documentaries like Louis Theroux's wild weekends, where I admired how much he got into it and how much he enjoyed playing a role in it. He did this as he tried to stay directly involved not hiding behind the camera at any point in time. After this he also placed a piece of behind the scenes when the documentary crew appeared on a TV show and you could see everything, including the camera setups and a microphone pole.

I also had a look at some David Attenbrough documentaries like frozen planet which was a good idea cause after watching that i liked watching his mix of participatory and expository documentaries with him sitting in front of the camera and his voice of god going over it which I would like to incorporate at some point. For incorporating it my plan is to use the interviewees themselves to voice over several bits of shots from when we are in there college and show everything that they can do while being able to explain it themselves

I want to do this because when researching my demographic I saw how much something about young musicians could effect teenagers and how they could link to it and being able to have people there age who do alot of the same things they do explaining there lives and where they wanna go should play into my demographic.
