High quality indicators

I was a little confused on what this discussion topic is supposed to be about specifically so I'm just going to reflect a little bit and talk about some things that I learned. After going through the indicator questions and completing the checklist, I learned that our program would qualify has high quality. Almost all of the items listed were answered with a yes when referring to our program. Something I keep seeing come up when talking about high quality is displaying child's artwork. Although I have seen this as a good thing to do, I didn't realize that it plays such a big part in high quality classrooms. Another area that I had spent extra time thinking about was the curriculum. Curriculum has always been pre-planned in every single school/program i've spent time in. Now this program has hardly any curriculum because it is Montessori based. I think it would be a bit of a challenge to design curriculum that fits student's current interests, but still meets state standards, especially when it needs to be preplanned in schools. The only thing I can think of is to make adaptations and do tweaking along the way to fit interests but still follows the curriculum that was planned.

There are so many different things that makes a quality classroom. Some of the things that I have seen/learned about this week really seem to make a classroom a top notch classroom. Some things are, allowing children to spend time with each other playing and exploring different materials. Also, allowing children to have access to multiple different things throughout the day. My understanding of this is being able to explore music, along with sensory materials, along with books, along with writing materials ect.. It's also so important that teachers work with students one on one, small groups and also as a class. Along with that, having childrens artwork or things that they have made is very important. This allows children to feel a sense of accomplishment to be able to look around the room and see their work up on the wall. It also makes it feel "homey". Some other things that I have learned is to make a quality classroom you also should be doing projects that are for extended periods of time not just one day little "projects". It's also important to allow children to play and explore the outdoors. There could be so much learning that is done from being outside, one being just working on their gross motor skills that they are unable to work on as much inside. Its also so important that your curriculum is adapted to all learning levels of the children! There are so many things that go into a quality classroom. Prek is such a pivotal time in a child's life that as a teacher you want to do everything in your power to have the child have the best experience possible in your prek classroom!

I learned about ten classroom indicators that are helpful for maintaining a high-quality environment. The children must be able to play and work with other children during the day. An easy way to incorporate this is having times in the schedule designated for free choice. It is also important for children to have access to a variety of activities. This can be through small or large group activities or having special areas during free choice that relate to the topic being taught in the class room. Children should be able to learn in both large and small groups during the day. My program uses large group to talk about the days of the week, counting the days in the month, and singing songs. We also use this time to welcome children back to school. Small-group activities give teachers time to teach more in-depth topics and to individualize support for children that may have a harder time understanding. By decorating the classroom environment with children's work and embedding child-led experiences, it lets children know that the work they are doing is important and valued and it allows them to reflect on what they've learned. The teachers can then assess and parents will see how smart their children are and what they are learning. Outdoor play and extended project also play an important role in the classroom. Outdoor play helps children develop their gross motor skills and extended projects helps children learn more about a topic. The teacher should also read books to the children individually or in small-groups. This can improve comprehension of topics and help children expand their vocabulary and language skills. It is important for teachers to recognize through assessment that children may need adaptions or modifications in the classroom to help them succeed. Not all children learn at the same pace and may need more scaffolding for them to understand. The last indicator is families need to feel safe and secure. This can happen through daily interactions, newsletters, and parental involvement opportunities. The parents learn about their child's teacher and then feel more comfortable to open up about concerns or questions.

"A place that's safe, a place with lots of materials in view and in reach of children, a place where teachers are always focused on the children and helping them learn. They're building vocabulary and doing science experiments voluntarily." These are some of the things I saw in the video with Dr. Stripek. I'm thinking about my own classroom and currently am struggling with the amount of activities I give the children to do. It's funny because with my own children, I spoil them and give them way too much stuff and they have a hard time being creative but at school, sometimes I feel like there's too much to do and it's too stimulating and sometimes I don't put out enough for center time. I found the video that was available VERY VERY helpful in my own classroom!! So many tips on helping me solve this problem! It's exactly what I needed this week, kind of funny how that worked out!

I learned a lot this week about ten very good indicators for a quality classroom. Some things that stood out to me and I have seen work is having children work, play, and explore together. The kids are able to work as a group and come up with some amazing things. I have seen a lot of great teachers that really incorporate children working together. In our classroom we work a lot in groups. I work with special needs children and to see them work and share together is a huge accomplishment.
Another thing that I have seen is teachers who have children's art work hanging up in the classroom. Every time I walk into a classroom kids love to show me what they made or are working on. They are proud of something that they did. This really shows that children are dedicated and are proud of what they are doing. I love to ask the kids why they did certain things in their art to hear their explanations. Overall, there was a lot of great things that I learned about that I will implement in my classroom.
