John Brown raid

John brown planned a armed rebellion hoping it would spread through the state. In one night in october 1859 Brown led a group of men and seized the federal arsenal. Soon after this federal troops reclaimed the arsenal and killed 10 of browns men. Brown was put on trial and was charged of treason then hung.

Missouri Compromise

Missouri was the first territory in the Louisiana Purchase to apply for statehood. The balance of slave states and free states was equal but Missouri allowed slavery. the slave states thought Missouri should have the right to choose to be a slave or no slave state. when Maine applied to be a state Henry Clay helped the two sides reach a compromise known as the Missouri compromise. Main became a free state Missouri became a slave state the Missouri compromise also established a boundary along the southern border of Missouri at the 36 60 northern latitude

Kansas-Nebraska Act

Senator Stephen Douglas wanted to be elected for president so he could build a transcontinental railroad to go from the Midwest to San Francisco, he needed his plan to appeal to southerners. Douglas needed to organize the land so it could be bought, sold, and settled, he organized it into Kansas and Nebraska. Douglas needed to get southerners to support his proposal, the slavery issue in the territories be settled by popular sovereignty. The kansas act became law in 1854,most people accepted this but kansas was determined to make sure it entered the union on the other side.

Polk's priorities was the newly built state of texas which used to be part of mexican territory but soon americans created there own war for independence in 1835 and demanded the area of the republic of texas. they asked the government to say texas was a state. which mexico did not accept texas's independence sp then the Polk sent troops to patrol the new texas border.

Election of 1860

In 1859 and 1860 many people were scared they were going to expand slavery. This all was going on while the 1860 election was happening. The republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln. The republican said they didn't want slavery to expand but also didn't want it to go. Many southerners didn't want Abraham Lincoln because even though the republican party said they wouldn't abolish slavery they were still worried they would. The northern democrats nominated Stephen Douglas. Others nominated for John Bell. The southern democrats nominated vice president John C. Breckinridge . In the end Abraham Lincoln had 180 votes while all the others had less than 100.

Dred Scott Decision

in 1857 the supreme court fanned the flames of controversy, dred scott was an enslaved man in missouri and the free state of illinois. He returned to Missouri where slavery was allowed, him and his wife though they should be free because they spend time in free territory. with the help of abolishment dread scott took their case to court, they sued for their freedom. based on the missouri law "once free, always free" over the next decade the combined case went all the way to supreme court. the courts chief justice was roger tanley, from free stated maryland. he was not a citizen therefore he had no right to file a lawsuit in federal court. black people free or enslaved were not citizens the ruling also confirmed that enslaved people were property. taney reasoned the fifth amendment that protected the slave owners rights to keep their property.while the kansas and nebraska act had already stepped away from the missouri compromise. the dred scott decision made the prohibition of slavery in the territories unconstitutional. southern slaveocracy would stop at nothing to further it cause.

Kentucky's Henry Clay, who proposed the Missouri compromise stepped forward. which the help of illinois Senator Stephen Douglas, Clay begged congress to pass the Compromise of 1850. the compromise had five parts one was to allow California to enter the union has a free state. Secondly to organize the remaining land from mexico into two large territories which was Utah and New Mexico and let people who lived there decide by popular sovereignty. third one was to pay Texas $10 million for giving up some land claims to New mexico. the Fourth one was to discontinue the slave trade In Washington D.C. lastly the fifth one is to strengthen the fugitive slave act of 1793.

The Theory of Secession is the thinking of being able to secede from the union. Secessionists believed that south carolina should secede form the union. Unionist believed that the compromise of 1850 was the best way to stay in the union. Cooperationists thought secession was only a good idea if other states joined south carolina. The Theory of Secession was all the why from around 1820 to 1860 and led all the way up to the Civil War.

Bleeding Kansas

The Kansas- nebraska act did not settle the issue of slavery in the united states. Missouri slaveholders feared they could loose the enslaved people they consider property if the neighboring state became anti-slavery, they encourage pro- slavery missourians to cross the borders and vote legally. The 1855 election resulted in pro- slavery legislature, but the free soilers rejected it and created their own legislature. Four different constitutions were written in all, and at one point, two separate governments operated in kansas at the same time. Violence broke out in lawrence when pro- slavery missourians blockaded the town and free-soilers gathered to defend it. After pro- slavery grand jury determined that lawrence's anti-slavery newspapers should be shut down, Pro slavery sheriff burned the newspaper offices and other buildings in towns. In 1856, he organized a group of men, Including five of his sons, and headed Pottawatomie creek, Pro slavery town near lawrence.kansas had become a battleground, and the territory now had a new nickname called bleeding kansas.
