Summary of Gaumard Hal Simulator

Gaumard is leading the world of simulation with their newest technology. Over the last ten years, this company has made great advances in the healthcare world. The first manikins that were used for simulation, were basic models utilized for task training and basic nursing skills. Now simulators are speaking, breathing, and capable of providing healthcare students a way to apply the skills they have learned. Hal, the newest member of the Gaumard family, has a combination of other manikins but also has built in artificial intelligence. This manikin can answer questions asked by the nurse such as time, date, year, etc. He can also be programmed to display signs of stroke such as weakness to one side, facial dropping, and slurred speech.

With this new simulator, we can give participants in the simulation a complete picture. The simulator’s ability to display the physical symptoms of a stroke is amazing. This will be a great asset to the visual learning and will solidify the correct assessment skills needed for this type of patient.

The technology that allows for a more fluid conversation that does not solely rely on the operator of the manikin is wonderful advancement. However, I personally have seen this simulator used in simulation and there were some issues with the simulator’s responses. If there are too many conversations in the simulation room, the simulator will have issues responding to the appropriate conversation. In this simulation, we had to turn off the Artificial Intelligence (AI) response. This is a great feature of the simulator but it only functions well in certain environments which is a limitation of its overall use.

As someone who currently works directly with simulation, I am very excited about this simulator and the work that Gaumard is doing. Currently some of our students feel that simulation is just not as beneficial as the real thing, but this shows that we are on the right track. I think that this is just a steppingstone for the future of innovative technology in the healthcare profession. Even during my time as a nursing student, the simulation usage and technology just keeps advancing with each year. Our students are getting that hands-on practice they crave before they go to clinicals, so they are better equipped for the real thing when it happens.

Strengths

My top five Strengths are Belief, Harmony, Input, Includer, Responsibility. An important part of being an asset to a team is taking responsibility of the task set before you. I believe this strength is a great foundation for a reliable and steadfast member that will see the project through until the very end.

My team would consist of Alice for achiever, Andrew for activator, Faith for futuristic, David for deliberative, and Matthew for maximizer. The members of this team would collaborate well together and maintain the same goal of completing the project. The world of simulation is forever changing and advancing. Alice, Andrew, and Faith would look towards the future. How can we improve our simulator and their effects on participants in simulation? To being a new project or innovation you must be open to looking past what is Infront of you to see where there is room to grow and improve. The three listed above would always be looking towards a new way to incorporate things and plan new ways to use the simulator. This is where Matthew and David would come in with their strengths. As a maximizer, Matthew, would be heavily involved with understanding all aspects of the simulator so he could present all functionality it possesses and in doing so find ways to make improvements. David can view all aspects of what could happen, sort of the devil’s advocate of the group. Preparing for things that could happen before they do is a great way to plan and troubleshoot if plan A fails.
