When you know where you want your students to go it is easier to get them there! Allow your students to see examples of the work you want them to do or model the performance you would like to see.

Make clear expectations for your students

Various tools for helping students understand expectations will help them achieve desired learning goals. To do lists and graphic organizers can all be useful tools in the classroom. This also support students intrinsic motivation to complete tasks.

Work on solving problems out loud

Working through your own thought process and thinking along with students. By sharing the journey to understanding, students gain more perspective. This may prevent a student from getting "stuck" on a task and giving up or falling behind.

Use structured class discussions

Many students may not want to participate in class discussion or some may want to talk all the time. Find balance between these two by using Sentence Starters or by having a Round Robin conversation. This will not only improve participation ratios but keep students on topic.

Teaching key vocabulary in the beginning

Instead of making students Google terminology, have them work in small groups to define important vocabulary. Encourage them to use pictures and context to retain new words in their memory.
