People are a product of their own environment. The main characters in these books were ostracized for being different from the majority. These differences started out as purely physical, however as they were more and more outcasted, mistreated, and/or judged by their peer's, a shift in mentality can be observed. This ostracization ultimately shaped their characters throughout the progression of their novels. Reading literature that allows the reader to delve deep into the analysis of people's lives and also experience their experiences alongside them, makes it possible for us to understand how to and why its important to be able to emphasize with those that are in the minority or physically/mentally different. It helps us understand and want to understand why people are the way they are and know that there is always a reason behind someones actions and behaviors.

In the character, Heathcliff pain leads him to turn on and to torment others. Being able to inflict pain provides him relief, which, as a reader, makes me wonder whether or not he is cruel because that's who he is naturally or he is cruel due to abuse he suffered as a child. In my opinion, Heathcliff cannot fully be blamed for his behavior considering the trauma he endured. I believe that its human nature to have gone through that kind go torment and come out very vindictive. As readers, we are able to have insight an understand why he does what he does, thus we are able to feel for him and almost make excuses for his actions, however Heathcliff himself does not have that type of insight into his aggressor's life. Hindley was Heathcliff's main tormentor. He did so because he felt as if Heathcliff had stolen his parents' affection from him. I wonder whether or not knowledge of Hindley's feelings would have affected the way Heathcliff steered his vindictive attitude. Maybe he could have felt empathy for Hindley life we do for Heathcliff, having read his backstory. Novels like these ultimately force us to pity victims and victimizers in the same degree.

The monster experiences isolation as a victim. He is alienated and secluded from humanity mostly based on his horrific looks, which causes him to later turn to violence. He experiences rejection first at the hands of his own creator (essentially is father) then by the community at a small village. The people run from him in terror. Though he was only innocently looking for food, his inhuman looks cause the villagers to believe he is a predator. The monster is shunned by the De Lacey family, who had observed months on end, and had grown to love. The family chose to ostracize the monster, which is what ultimately pushes him to act out in violence against Victor, whom the monster blames for making him so hideous, thus unloveable. Shelley challenges us as the readers to question the degree of harm social rejection causes. Though it would be easy for us to judge the monster for being so evil and violent, its important for us to understand what let him to that place. When we look at his backstory, it's much easier for us to pit the monster because we know what he's been through. In the real world, we are so quick to judge others based on their actions but imagine a world where we are able to see the events that led to those choices. Would we receive people differently?

Bernard Marx feels out of place because he is physically different from his peers. There is a rumor that someone thought he was a Gamma, so they put alcohol in his blood-surrogate, stunting his growth. So, Bernard possesses the intelligence of an Alpha Plus, but he has the appearance of a lower caste member. Consequently, he is seen as abnormal by his peers and the lower castes. Being ostracized, Bernard isolates himself in his own world. He only prefers to be alone or with his friend, Helmholtz Watson. In the beginning he criticizes his society and its values, and he feels that he is superior to his peers because he thinks freely and does not, in his mind, conform to the conditioning like everyone else. But, once he comes back with the Savage, he is accepted by his peers, and revels in all the pleasures his society has to offer, like drugs and sex. He complete abandons his previous attitude towards his society. In the end, he begs Mustapha Mond not to banish him to some remote island, away from the very society he claimed to hate in the beginningof the novel. Bernard's situation is different because he got to experience both sides of isolation. It's interesting to see how fast his attitude changed once he was included and I wonder how the other 2 characters would've been in that situation.

Heathcliff, Frankenstein, and Bernard were all characters that stood out from the majority. They were different, and because of their physical differences they were mistreated by those around them. It appears as tho all three characters began as innocent individuals, longing to belong in their environments, but as time goes on, their mentalities and behaviors begin to shift towards a more antagonistic light. Reading about characters such as these gives us the ability to empathize with those that we would normally ignore or judge. It gives us the insight to be able to resize that there are events that occur in everyones life that shape the way they receive others. Literature helps us to realize that people will be products of the environment that surrounds them. Before we go judging others or become personally offended by how we are treated, it's important to realize this as the true reality.
