My name is Melanie Valdes and I am a student at Miami Dade College specifically the Hialeah campus. I am also employed at the college as a student assistant for the Liberal, Arts and Science department. Through this job I have worked with professors and students alike in order to help them with whatever it is that they need. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and I come from a cuban household. My goals and ambitions include attending law school at the University of Miami to then hopefully becoming a practicing attorney here in Florida. I became passionate about law when I got into college which motivated me to better myself as a student. This passion fuled me to maintain myself on the deans list every semester which is an achievement I am proud of. Outside of school I spend most of my time with family and friends. I love going out dancing and having fun. On my down time to relax I usually just read a book. Thank you for taking the time in reading my post. All the best!

Climate Gentrification

In this video climate gentrification is made clear that it does put people in harms way or in some form of risk. I appreciated that in the video they made a clear distinction between climate gentrification and just gentrification. What also stands out in the video would be the visuals. It shows locations that are closer to the beach are more in danger due to rising sea levels. These visuals include flooded streets and bikers and cars commuting in these conditions. These elements really emphasized to me why climate gentrification is something to look out for and be aware of. Another point that stood out to me from the video would be the differences in social economic neighborhoods and how this change is affecting affluent ares as well as historically less affluent or impoverished places. For example, one side can move and cause the cost of living to increase while the ladder is being forced out of their neighborhoods to make way for new development or to be gentrified. I believe this video shows that something must be done with the displacement of citizens as well as just all around improvement of policies regarding the people of Miami.

The video What if a solution to the plastic crisis is closer than we think, spoke to me because it highlighted that the plastic crisis in the world has less to do with cleanup but more to do with the production of plastic. The video also suggested that plastic production is to be tripled. It makes me think about how the world would look like 10 to 20 years from now. Would the ocean be riddled with plastic and waste? Will climate change continue to worsen due to the production of plastic? These questions due cause some sort of panic when thought about but the video is helpful because it does offer solutions. For example, by making reusable products it then in turn reduces the amount of plastic produced and that leads to one part of the solution for the plastic crisis. This video opened my eyes further to this issue but also provided ways in which I myself or anyone watching can help combat this problem as well as big corporations and manufacturers.

Link to video: https://www.storyofstuff.org/movies/movies-sp-series-intro/

In the video How Green Is Solar Energy Really, I learned many things in regard to solar panels. Solar panels are an environment-friendly alternative to let's say the usage of fossil fuels for the plant. It lowers emissions which all in all is good for the plant. This video points out though that the process of creating solar panels is not 100 percent green. The materials of solar panels have to first be mined and then transported to then be produced in a factory where they then can be used. This process does cause emissions to be released into the atmosphere but it is significantly less than fossil fuel usage. I learned that it is extremely beneficial and the more we use solar power the cleaner the process of making them will become.

I will specifically explore in my topic the corruption in businesses within the United States and the agenda that fuels things like bribery in American corporations. For example,a politician might have a certain agenda or a government figure might be interested in a certain outcome within their own powers. I will also be mentioning what can be done to prevent or stop this from continuing to happen which all in all relates to the improvement of our society. For instance, 1994 through 1995 a CIA report indicated that the United States about $36 billion in deals was lost due to bribery. This shows the impact of bribery within buisnesses which is a point I will be making in my presentation.

References:

Bribery and controversy in the US and global market - vc.bridgew.edu.
Goal 16: peace, justice and strong institutions

My topic is about corruption within businesses like for example bribery and this falls into goal 16: peace, justice and strong institutions. Climate finance is money put towards helping climate change like efforts to reducing emissions and all in all helping the environment. It is said that billions of dollars are going into helping climate change but this also leaves a spot open for corruption within businesses. For instance, about $13 billion climate funds are put towards the water sector but 7-15% of that money which comes out to about 2 billion is estimated gets lost to corruption. Clearly in this aspect there must be more vigilance put towards these issues so that both can improve instead of causing detrimental affects to society

Padlet Review: Cynthia Cruz

I chose Cyntia's padlet to review for numerous reasons, for instance, I believe the color of her layout really catches the eye. There is a forest backdrop and the text bubbles are light green. I think it draws the readers in and makes the padlet all around look neat and presentable. I think what spoke to me in the padlet would be her selected goal which revolves around clean water. She uses a gif as a visual representation which also adds to her point. Also, the visual representation in all her texts are good quality and easy to see, I feel that is very considerate to the reader. While I was reading her posts I found that each text is thorough and well thoughtout. Another detail worth mentioning would be the text is also easily understandble which is essential to use in padlet so that anybody who wants to learn about a topic can read and process the information easily.

Link to Cynthia's padlet: https://padlet.com/cyntiacruz7/my-portfolio-7eztzpulrkbgt0rm

Desalination

The desalination of ocean water can be a great solution in providing fresh water for places in the world that do no have it. The process of desalination can occur either through boiling the water and catching the steam which results in the water no longer having salt or the water can be put through various filters which seperates the salt from the water. Freshwater is a neccesity that not all places around the world have which means this process of converting ocean water to fresh drinkable and usable water can surely be a solution. Desalination can provide a better form of living in many places, for example, the middle east which is known to be a dry area of the world. Now, if those efforts were to be applied to all the dry areas around the globe than quality of living would improve for many people. Although it is an expensive process, it remains clear that it is something worth putting time and effort in.

Sources:

https://www.fastcompany.com/90786918/drinking-water-scarcity-is-desalination-solution

https://www.usgs.gov/special-topics/water-science-school/science/desalination

Why The Great Barrier Reef Could Disappear by 2050

I watched the video, Why The Great Barrier Reef Could Disappear by 2050, which details why and how the great barrier reef is dying and essentially the repercussions of that. I learned that the the main cause of the great barrier reef dying is mass coral bleaching which strips the reef of its color and prevents it from getting the nutrients it needs to survive. The video explained that this can be brought on by warm water which occurs on hot days. This leads into the bigger picture when it pertains to the damage done to thr great barrier reef which is climate change. If greenhouse emissions are not reduced than the reef will continue to be severly damaged. Furthermore, the video detailed that the Australian goverment reported that the condition of the great barrier reef went from poor to very poor which is extremely alarming. Something must be done to help the reef because that is its own ecosystem which if affected or gone in turn affects other ecosystems.

My Experience With PSC 1515

While taking PSC 1515 I leanred various things in regards to science and society and how it all plays a role in day to day life. The course included topics that entailed the betterment of society to electromagnetic waves that can be found all around us. This course was ultimately informative and stimulating.

Initially, I did not realize how much information regarding science we were going to cover. During the course we covered a variety of things that fall within the scientific category. This for me was different than my other science classes because we did not stick to one subject of science like for example, biology. I assumed as a class we would be taught about one branch of science and expand on a single topic.

Furthermore, my experince in this course exceeded my expecations due to the different activites we were assigned to do. This is the first class I have taken where all work is to be completed in class. This was challenging in a good way because as a student I practiced time management. Also, when having to turn in assignments each class it guarantees that students will more likely pay attention in order to retain the information to be able to complete each task. Another aspect of the course that I enjoyed was creating the padlet. Since each student had their indiviudal padlet I was able to have an insight into the thoughts and work of my peers. The padlet along with the in class assignments proved to be an overall enjoyable experince.

Moreover, the activities proved to be rather engaging as it included quizzes, discusiions, and lectures. The activites changed my perception of science in the sense that it does not have to be complicated the way we relate science to everyday issues. Just understanding for instance, different methods of solar energy provides a bit of scientific knowledge and it can help with everyday life. I feel due to this i have come out with a more postive outlook on science as it relates to society.

Overall, PSC 1515 has proved to be an enlightening and fascinating course. I learned various topics within science that are useful in ones personal life as well as in society as a whole. The course was different to what I am use to and proved to be effective in its way of teaching. It provided new experinces and lessons that will stick with me throughout my educational career.
