Jerusalem, Israel

Jerusalem was the first place that Marco Polo went on his journey when he left with his father and uncle. He got stuck there and his dad and uncle had to leave. One similarity is that it is still the main religious city of the Jews. One difference is that it is now in the center of a war torn country. A problem that was caused by the time gap was that Israel now has a very large population and it made it harder for the Americans to get around. I didn't slow them down too much but it did put a dent in their plans.

Zhangye was a major city for Marco Polo because it was one of the main cities he worked in for the Great Khan. One similarity is that it is still owned by China. One difference is that it is now called Beijing and it is no longer under Mongol rule. A problem that was caused by the time gap was that in Marco Polo's time the city was under a different rule and in the American's time it was just another Chinese city that was no different form any other.

Persia was an interesting place during Marco Polo's time because it had amazing architecture. One similarity is actually the architecture and how it survived through all these years. One difference is that it is no longer Persia it is now called Afghanistan. A problem that was faced between the two time periods is that Marco Polo had power because he worked for Kublai Khan but, the Americans had to get visas and travel in secret through most of the country.

Tibet was one of the first places on Marco Polo's trip back to Venice. It was different from other places in Asia because it had lots of color from all the robes that the people wore and the banners and ribbons on the street signs. One similarity is that there were lots of the same monuments and statues that were there from Marco Polo's time. One difference is that there is a much bigger population and the streets were very clogged.

During Marco Polo's time he had lots of ways to get places. On his way to Sumatra, he was able to get royal passage from Kublai Khan. One similarity is that they both had a way to get there by sea. One difference is that the Americans needed to use a cargo ship to get there instead of a large sail barge. One problem created by the time difference is actually the time. When Marco Polo went through the tribes had not been civilized yet but, when the Americans went through the tribes had become civilized and were interacting with other people on the island.

When Marco Polo took his journey he went through what today is Iran, but back then it was still called Persia. One similarity is that it still has the small ethnic groups and religions that were there when Marco Polo traveled though it. One difference is that it is now atheocracy and no one is just allowed to travel through it like Marco Polo did on the way back to China.

Most Important Lesson

I think that the most important lesson the Americans learned during their travels was that things don't always go the way they think they should. One example of this is when they tried to get into Iran and they had to make a detour and go through it on the way back. Another example is all the time that was wasted when they had to wait from their visas in many of the countries they traveled to. This is an important lesson because it will help them with patience and other skills for when the do other things with their lives.
