Randi Merritt- Students have to have their permission slips signed before they can be videoed or photographed. Any videos the students create or we create for them to use can be delivered under "private." That way only people we want to see the videos will actually see them. No one can get to them at all. Live streaming can be done the same way. That ensures that only the ones we want to see the live stream actually sees it. We can also view any comments through the chat and only allow ones we want to get through to get through.

I agree with responses above, permission slips and privacy settings are the first step. Another thing that I recently learned through professional development was to keep in mind any identifying information. I think we all know this, and know that we need to think about privacy when posting online. But, thinking about Back to School pictures, as an example, be sure to not include bus number in the picture, child's full name, and teacher's name. This information seems harmless, but could be used to track down a student. It is sad, but I think it is important to be thinking in this frame of mind when posting, especially live videos. We can remedy this by being sure to limit identifying information in our videos.

In addition to permission forms being signed and privacy settings being set to private, we also need to be sure that students are not on the "no picture" list as well as "do not release" list. Even if we make the settings private, those who it is shared with can still show it or share it with others. If that is true, then those students would/should not be allowed to participate in the videos or live streaming events. SIS is supposed to be using YouTube to live stream our announcements next year. This is a concern for me because this will restrict which students can be "on camera" during announcements -- even if the privacy setting is private. There was discussion of also streaming other events that occur during the school year for those parents who cannot attend something physically at the school. Because SIS is not a "community" school, we have lots of transportation issues with parents and students being able to get to school for extra events. We viewed this as a possible solution, but I think privacy issues may not allow that to happen as easily as we first thought. I would be interested to see what others think about this idea.

Hi Patti, I agree that there are privacy concerns with YouTube; however, it shouldn't prevent us from doing announcements. We just need to move forward with a plan. I agree that students doing announcements need to have clear media release forms; however, it is really just a precaution as we are making the videos private and/or unlisted (which makes them unsearchable). The only liability would be if a STAFF member shared the link with others and we need to train our staff not to do that. To me, that is the real takeaway: we need to train staff on responsible use.

There is certainly a great deal to consider as we start using social media more for our benefit as opposed to being the "target" of it. I think there will be a learning curve for the moderators as well as the students and family members. I think part of it will be educating parents as to our goals as well. There is great possibility in the effective and responsible use of livestreaming. We need to progress cautiously and responsibly - keeping the focus on keeping our students protected but at the same time, opening the world to them.

I agree with all of the above. Training adults may be our biggest job in some ways! A lot of our students (while many still use sketchy online habits) are trained yearly on how to be safe on the internet. It is certainly important to make sure students participating in online streaming do have all the proper paperwork in place to be on the channel. I do think this could serve as a good opportunity to maybe also educate parents (and refresh some staff) about how to use social media platforms in safe ways. Things like Christy shared.....there are probably a lot of parents who have never thought about their child's bus or teacher name being an identifying factor when predators hit the internet.

I agree with everyone's statements. Going back to Patti, I think it is a great idea to LiveStream and/or record and post videos of events. What do we do, though, when there is a student that is not allowed to be videoed or photographed? I worked in a Kindergarten classroom last year and the teacher and I used Class Dojo to post class pictures and send parents individual pictures of their students working and having fun. We were always really careful not to post pictures that included one particular student. It was easier to stage pictures, but I'm not sure how it would be for performances?

I agree with what everyone has said. When we increase our implementation of online use there are many things to be mindful of to keep students and staff safe. We should always check into which students have turned in permission slips and are able to live stream. It's also safe to keep them private. In response to Christy's post, I didn't even think about children being identified based on their teacher name, lunch number, etc. until I attended that session at OER. Some of our students (and their families) are going through a lot and it's important to keep them safe and anonymous - especially when streaming online. Just being mindful and educated about safety should help us to use online tools effectively and securely. -Maria
