Fairground

Fairgrounds in American society can be seen as a dark underworld of the criminal world especially at night. In Strangers On A Train both deaths take place at night at the fairground. Firstly Miriam towards the beginning of the film and then Bruno at the end of the film. The fairground can be seen as a place Miriam is free to indulge in her own desires which are looked down on in 1950s America. Miriam is seen flirting with two men and Hitchcock portrays her in a way to make the audience dislike her. The ending of the Fairground scene is disturbing. The fairground music is distorted and sped up which is intended to excite but also disturb the audience. The quick editing and close ups of the horses faces is unsettling.

The setting of The Talented Mr Ripley

Each important scene in the Talented Mr Ripley seems to be set near or in the water. At the start of the film, Ripley starts his journey on a boat and at the end of the film he ends his journey on the boat. Usually the use of the sea in films are shown in a positive light but in the film it is shown in a negative light as Dickie gets murdered in the sea, connoting that it is not represented as a happy or peaceful place in the film. From looking at the mise en scene and the setting, it shows that RIpley and Dickie are the only ones in the sea, showing that they are in complete isolation. The boat is also rocking up and down, suggesting that it is not good weather, which reinforces that something bad is going to happen in this setting,. Therefore connecting it to the narrative.

1950s America

Both films: The Talented Mr Ripley (Minghella) and Strangers On A Train (Hitchcock) are influenced by 1950s America. Although The Talented Mr Ripley is set in Europe (Italy) the film starts with Tom Ripley living in America, Dickie's conservative father encourages him to travel and bring Dickie back to America. During the 1950s Italy was seen as a much more liberal country. The two binary oppositions of Dickie's liberal way of life in Italy and Dickie's father's conservative way of life in America can be represented through Dickie's love of Jazz and his father's love of classical music. In Strangers On A Train Guy the protagonist represents the American ideal, he is athletic, conservative and has a good work ethic. At the time the film was made the conservative Republican president Eisenhower was in power. Guy represents this ideal especially compared to Bruno who wears eccentric flamboyant clothes. In the opening sequence this is established as he wears white gaudy shoes compared to Guy's simple brown conservative shoes.

At the start of The Talented Mr Ripley the mise en scene in America is very hectic and Ripley is balancing many jobs, however when he arrives in italy it gives ripley an insight of how the other half are living. The contrast between America and Italy highlights the difference of how people are living in the 1950s and gives the audience an indication of the american dream.
