I incorporate culture into my lessons frequently by asking students to explore various Art forms from other countries and cultures. Sometimes this is related to present day - for example we just finished our unit on the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday that is often confused for the "Mexican Halloween." We spend time discussing the traditions of the holiday and how it is unique and different from Halloween but also investigate why it is mistakenly connected to Halloween. We also explore cultures in the past by looking at ancient artifacts, for example we have done a unit on cultural masks used for ceremonies, rituals or celebrations from all over the world.

One of the easiest ways that I used culture in the classroom was to use relatable text and text where students could see themselves. I also made sure that I got to know my students and found out what interested them so if they loved sports, I used sports in my lessons. If they were really into music then I would incorporate music. One of my best math lessons used a song by a popular hip hop artist at that time and to this day former students tell me that they will never forget how to do this operation because of the song we created!

I try to include texts that represent many different cultures and experiences. Writing is an easy way for students to be able to connect their cultural and ethnic experience with content. I also support language with images and graphics to help support language learning and try to make as many real-world connections as possible.

Prokopis- In Lit wheel, our focus is mythology. We incorporate culture by reading myths, legends, and folk-tales from all over the world. Our central focus is Greek Mythology, but we tie in the others as well. In all classes I try to relate material to student experience. I encourage students to share about their experiences during class discussion.

I try to have open discussions based on "Quality Questioning" philosophy. At the beginning of the year, we talk about how to be polite, open conversationalists. I have norms in my class ("every student must feel respected", "every student is expected to try to answer questions asked of them", and "every student has the right to take time to think.") One of the biggest ways to change classroom toxicity is to have students really listening and responding politely to one another and learn about each other's differences/ cultures as we read and respond to texts.

Today we read really bad poems to practice for eye contact, and there were poems from a variety of cultures. I think it helps just to be curious and encouraging at all times. It a student brings up a specific holiday or tradition, sometimes I'll follow up and find out more. During a recent lunch detention, I found out a student is planning a trip to Israel for his Bar Mitzvah. There are many opportunities every day to find out what's going on with students and piggyback on it, ask good questions, or learn more.

I was interested in viewing the Verizon recording that the instructor used for their base 10 lesson, but was blocked by the filter. I love to make a connection to a student's world when possible in math. Since we are no longer required to be out in the hall at 8:05, I've found that being in the classroom provides opportunities for me to become involved in the student's discussions and get to know them more individually. Homeroom has become my best opportunity to get to know my students so that I can make relevant connections.

I think to truly engage students, we must reach out to them in ways that are culturally and linguistically responsive and appropriate. I try to learn more about each student and not go off assumptions and stereotypes that are sometimes in the classroom.
