What's at stake?

To understand the stake of the occupation, one must understand the reasoning behind the occupation. The Native Americans wanted to build a cultural center that included Native American Studies, an American Indian spiritual center, an ecology center, and an American Indian Museum. This was a motive for occupation and they wanted to use the law to back them up. The Native Americans felt that because the penitentiary was closed on March 21, 1963, and the island had been declared surplus federal property in 1964, they had the right to reclaim the island. The thing at stake was an answer to a much larger question. Which was, what rights would Native Americans be guaranteed and how will prior be upheld?

They made the bold accusation that the U.S. government was breaking numerous Indian treaties. They would use this argument as a justification for others to join there cause. The main strategy of the actual occupation was for people to make landings and continuously supply those involved in the occupation. They attempted to use media such as daily radio broadcasts, and a newsletter in order to spread the word and perpetuate the fight.

The Occupation resulted in a direct impact on Indian policy and would set a precedent for Indian activism in America. Movements such as the Trail of Broken Treaties, the BIA occupation, the Wounded Knee Incident, and others seem to have been rooted from the example set in Alcatraz. In March 1970, a Seattle-based group called the United Indians of All Tribes, occupied Fort Lawton, demanding the return of, what they considered to be, indigenous lands. Fort Lawton was going to soon be declared as surplus land, similarly to Alcatraz.

The Occupation of Alcatraz had the attention of the whole nation but only received a real response from certain groups. Members of San Francisco's hippie and drug scene had moved onto the island, looking for a lifestyle that suited their beliefs and actions. But, soon there would be rules put into place that prohibited non-Indians from staying overnight on the island.

The Occupation of Alcatraz set a precedent for Native Americans to not stay quiet but rather become activists in situations provoking requiring a response of that sort. Both protests used the media to spread their message and support of the cause. This use of the media led to an exposure of the conflict to the general public that allowed for expansion in the amount of protesters.

Lessons Learned

Native Americans have learned that protesting on an isolated island may prove to be more difficult than expected. The Occupation of Alcatraz came to an end due to the fact that the federal government was able to cut off all electrical power and telephone service to the island. The people were left with no power, water, and a diminishing unenthusiastic protest base. A lesson that can be learned is that if there is a will, theres a way. Through rallying others and spreading the idea with the media, they were able to hold the occupation for a whole 19 months. The use of media will prove to be a strong ally for those attempting to protest for change. But, the down side of the media was attracting people not very motivated for the cause, such as druggies and hippies, who would less further the cause and rather degrade the seriousness of the issue.
