"Daisy put her arm through his... Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever." (pg. 93, Ch.5)

Around the time that this quote had been said in this part of the book, one dramatic scene was occurring which involved a tense interaction between Tom and Gatsby. In this moment, Tom and Gatsby were engaged in an argument which brought up topics that included, the love affair between Daisy and Gatsby, the true occupation of Gatsby, loyalty of Tom towards the marriage, and so-on. The significance of this quote in accordance to the context of the story was that in they eyes of Gatsby, the green light symbolized the ultimate goal he had which was obtaining Daisy to be his one true love. Now, Gatsby was able to achieve his goal, He had finally sought Daisy and the green light which also signified the distance between Gatsby and Daisy held no more importance to Gatsby.

Character/plot and symbol Relation

Throughout the entirety of the book, many symbols and themes had been referenced as people, objects, or as settings in the story. The symbol that is acknowledged in the padlet is the significance of the green light. In the book, readers are first introduced to the green light at the same time the character, Gatsby, is being introduced. In this passage, the Nick Caraway describes this moment of Mr. Gatsby in this scene as the first time he met him. He saw Mr. Gatsby on the dock looking outwards onto the bay and Nick sees Mr. Gatsby stretching his arms towards a green light. Later in the book we find out that Mr. Gatsby ultimate goal during that time of his life was making Daisy become his one true love. Then even later throughout the book, we find that Gatsby had obtained his house near Nick for the sole reason of being near Daisy.

Ultimately we find out that the significance of the green light to Gatsby had disappeared due to the fact that he had finally been able to reach Daisy. This symbol had been brought up during a heated conversation between Mr. Gatsby and Tom Buchanan, one of the intense scenes in the book. In this scene, Mr. Gatsby had brought up that he had always seen a green light on the dock of Tom's house. This shows how much significance it meant to Mr. Gatsby, but little importance to the rest of the characters. This is one of the few plot events that such a topic about the green light had been brought up in the book. Other times when the green light had been brought up was somewhere near the first part, where Mr. Gatsby was on the dock, and at the end, where Nick finally realizes the significance of the green light. The characters mostly involved with this symbol are Mr. Gatsby and Daisy.
