Hale enters Salem as a stoic minister, who truly and utterly believes that his work in the town is righteous and good. However, as Hale continues to take part in Salem's trials and begins to see the many strained relationships between the townspeople, he doubts the credibility of the accusers (ie Abigail and the other girls). This uncertainty in the court causes Hale to question his ideals and beliefs, as well as that of the court.
