September 11th, 2017
In the first plenary lecture the definition of civilisation was discussed, and it was discovered that is no one correct definition. Civilisation is defined according to which civilisation one belongs, which can lead to ethnocentrism. Evidence of this is in Spanish literature and history writing, as their interpretation of Neo-Indians were ethnocentric and androcentric.
An important note is the writing of Paul-Michel Foucault as he describes the more powerful group as having their ideas deemed right and those of the less powerful group as wrong.

November 30th, 2017

Prior to my involvement in this course my expectation of the course was similar to those of Caribbean history and Caribbean studies in high school. Initially, I thought that whatever was taught in these subject would be reiterated. The definition of the Caribbean, the concept of one Caribbean identity and the different institutions put in place to promote this were some of the topics expected to be discussed.
However, it is safe to say that the course is more mature and demands more discussion and critical thinking on these topics rather than just accepting what meets the eye. The information provided in the course is extensive and more in-depth, and has thus changed my perspective on the study of the Caribbean.
My degree is in Environmental Science, and as a natural sciences student it is very rare that I would be called on to discuss social issues. However, this course has encouraged me to approach my degree in a new light by taking Caribbean history and social issues into consideration when engaging problem solving discussions. My perception of the course and Caribbean history itself has changed. Caribbean becomes less boring and less tedious when it told from the point of view of Caribbean people.
However, I must admit that more effort was needed on my part especially where particular assignments were concerned. I have come to realise my strengths and weaknesses because of this ; because of my disposition of seeing direct discussion and knowledge of the issues as being more important than literature with themes based on these issues it made assignment 2 a tedious task. I have reflected on this and admit that it is something I must work on to a achieve a more holistic view.

November 20th, 2017

The University of the West Indies (UWI) began in 1949 in Mona, Jamaica. Campuses had been established in Cave Hill, Barbados and St. Augustine, Trinidad by the 1960s. The UWI stands as a pillar for regional integration in the Caribbean and has become the premier tertiary education in the English-speaking Caribbean. The idea is to eliminate boundaries in order to have a more close-knit relationship between Caribbean countries thus promoting a Caribbean identity. This is achieved by activities such as UWI games, which brings together participants from each campus into one island under the spirit of good sportsmanship and camaraderie. Students are encouraged to view the university as a single institution where students from different parts of the region are not seen as "foreigners".
