Chips weren't as popular back then and they were made by frying up chips of potatoes with little oil. The earlier fish and chips shop from the 1860s onwards had very simple facilities and used a hot cauldron over a coal fire. Now fish is made coated in batter and deep fried, like the chips.

The pretzel was first created in the German monastery in the 7th century. A monk had a problem. The children refused to memorize their prayers. The children said " Saying prayers wont fill our stomachs up with bread or meat ". Back then many people in Europe were dying because there wasn't enough food to go around. So the monk called a meeting with all the other monks in the monastery and suggested giving children bread if they memorize their prayers. They shaped the bread to look just like hands at prayer
