This short story definitely gives off more of a 21st-century found footage horror feel reminiscent of the movie “unfriended”. The story is about the relationship between two characters boyfriend Alex and crazy girlfriend Shonda. Shonda desperately wants to get back together with Alex and she goes to extreme lengths to talk to him. Alex eventually gets a restraining order against her after she shows up at his job uninvited. Her erratic behavior eventually culminates in th death of Alex’s mom at the hands of Shonda. It is about a kid who watches cursed VHS tapes. The VHS tapes contain videos of deaths. The main character's own father died in an "accident" recently and he can't help but wonder if these VHS tapes contain footage of what really happened. The tapes are cursed, and everyone who watches them eventually ends up in them as one of the deaths. The main character also claims to be seeing faceless children stalking him throughout the story. The faceless children appear in the VHS tapes and are often the cause of the deaths. At the end of the story, our main character watches the last tape in the series volume VIII. Right after the tape finishes the faceless children from the tapes appear in his living room. The cursed VHS tape is a classic example of a trope from this genre. I also liked how the main character goes into the story searching for answers about his dad, it adds a good bit of mystery to it. At the end of the story the main character ends up as just another victim of the tapes. It is implied that these cursed tapes will continue to claim victims because by the end the curse doesn't get broken. He is staying at his dad's house, Peter's dad is a dumpster diver and garbage picker. They are out picking through trash on a dump day when Peter finds a pile of old VHS tapes outside a house. He takes the tapes home and watches a few. They mostly consist of old movies he's already seen and old TV commercials. One sticks out though, it looks like a home video. The tape starts with a scared-looking kid who is about the same age as Peter setting up a camera to face his bed while he sleeps. Then suddenly an entity appears and begins to try and pull the boy under the bed. Peter is confused by this and thinks it's a scene from some horror movie he hasn't seen before. He goes back to the house where he found the tape to try and find answers. He meets the owner of the house, it turns out the boy in the video was his brother who is now deceased. The man describes how his brother would often claim to be attacked by a monster at night, no on believed him though. He takes the tape back from Peter stating that it is his family's business and not his. It's also the most paranormal of them all, with a supernatural entity as the main antagonist. I thought the premise lined up with the "found footage" theme very well. His editor then travels to Coal Hill in search of clues about his disappearance The editor films her investigation and we are told the rest of the story through transcriptions of these recordings. She eventually find the trail where the journalist disappeared and we read one last recording transcription of her going into the woods. The story then cuts to a message board discussing the most recent vanishing, the editor. The mystery and supernatural elements to the story were enjoyable. I like the stories that use more unconventional methods to tell the story. The mystery is regarding a YouTube user by the name of "Ghost Town Adventures". This seems to be one of those urban exploration channels prevalent on the site. The story describes the mystery behind the last upload on the channel titled "Hellpme". Many people believe that this upload was faked for views and attention but it doesn't seem that way to the writer. One of the main reasons why it is hard to believe this video was to draw attention to the channel is that they haven't uploaded anything since. Normally when creators pull massive PR stunts like this they try to ride the wave not just quit entirely. The contents of the video also seem fake to some but convincing to others. The video consists of what seems to be a normal urban exploration video of an abandoned town. Things start to go wrong however when the video starts to glitch and show the town as inhabited. The cameraman also seems to see these glitches as if they are happening in real life. The video ends with the camera man attempting to escape while the glitchy inhabitants of the town pursue him, it is unknown if he made it out. It reminds me of things in real life that you'd see in "creepiest videos on YouTube" lists. The characters in the story seem to believe that the video posted by Ghost Town Adventures is faked. It's not an outlandish assumption. This story reminds me of a real-life situation where a youtube user captured what seemed to be paranormal activity in an abandoned mine. That user didn't go missing like the one in the story instead riding the popularity wave that followed the video going viral. Though other internet users seem to have differing opinions on what happened as the reader of the story it makes the most sense for it to end with the camera man getting got.
