In November I joined the board of the Voluntary Sector Studies Network, or VSSN, which is a research network connecting academics and practitioners researching the voluntary sector across the UK. I used one of my ESV days with Volunteer Scotland to attend the board away day and it was a great opportunity to turn off my work brain and focus on getting to know my fellow board members and dig into the discussion topics we had for the day.

"Christmas was a very special time at Somebody Cares where everyone pitched in to prepare hundreds of food bags to keep families going through the holiday period. The staff had it all so well organised so volunteers old and new could fill the orders. "Myself and Jennifer have volunteered for about 2 1/2 years now. We wanted to be involved with a local charity. Somebody Cares offers all needs . We get great satisfaction from helping where we can. If you decided to join you will feel that you are making a difference to local people less fortunate.

Recently I delivered a food parcel to a lady , we sometimes give them flowers. She was so grateful getting a food parcel. But when I gave her flowers she cried. She had received bad news about her health that morning . But said she couldn't remember last time someone gave her flowers and she saw a bit of light at the end of a dark tunnel."

The volunteer team at Blackpool Carers Centre make our house a home for the unpaid carers we support. Working with those from the ages of 5 to 95 who care for family and friends who need help with their physical or mental health and those struggling with problematic substance misuse, our volunteers create the welcome, bring the smiles and raise the funds to make sure our work continues. "I volunteer in the foodbank with some of the loveliest, funniest and kindest folks you could meet. An added bonus is that many of them have now become my good friends. I do 4 hours a week and it gives me a routine and something to look forward to. When filling up the food bags I plan meals in my head that the families could make adding extra treats along with necessities."

We are a horticulture and conservation project on 15 acres of land in Dumbarton. Though our volunteers numbers aren't large, their impact is. They're helping us to turn overgrown, previously unmanaged land, into community food growing spaces, wild flower meadows, an orchard, and outdoor classroom spaces. Our volunteers are helping to build the project and it's future. A big thank you to all of them, past and present.
