My portrayal of a scientist encompasses a middle-aged man of European appearance dressed in a lab coat with long hair, glasses and an awkward gait immersed in a science laboratory, experimenting with chemicals. The depiction of a scientist is often generalised through a progressive narrative that emerged in the West from the 18th century through the late 20thcentury. Sir Isaac Newton is widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time. Newton’s laws of motion and universal gravitation laid the foundations of classical mechanics, which remains relevant in today's society.

I chose to draw the stereotypical scientist that most people think of when they hear the word scientist (Messy hair and playing around with beakers and flasks full of dangerous chemicals). The typical drawing of the scientist would likely have originated several hundred years ago. The likes of Einstein and Newton are two famously known scientists whom the image of the scientist was probably based from. This preconceived image and interpretation of all scientists could not be further from the truth in the 21st century, with scientists having a range of appearances, existing across many ages, and practicing in countless disciplines.

Description:
I drew the Wright Brothers because many people think of the Einstien and Newton and/or labcoats and safety goggles when they hear the word 'scientist'. Although the Wright brothers aren't considered as scientists, they did utililse science (physics in particular) in order to fly the first successfully powered and controlled plane in December 17, 1903.

Origin:
When I thought of a scientist, Einstein was the first to pop into my mind. However I didn't draw him as I knew most students will. I chose to draw the Wright brothers, because I have a passion for aircrafts and learning more about the brothers interests me.

Conclusion:
A scientistis a person who observes and wanders, conducts experiments and asks questions who then uses different methods to answer them. That is why I consider the brothers as scientists. They became obsessed with science when a toy helicopter was tossed into the air and flew across the room instead of falling. The depiction of the brothers dates from late 19th-20th Century. They're recognised as influential as airplanes are still relevant in contemporary society.

The Scientist I drew was closely linked to Albert Einstein. He is holding a flask to represent chemistry, wearing glasses and a long white lab coat which is the general stereotype of what people think of when they hear the word 'scientist'.

The origin of this scientist representation is most likely due to famous scientists and how they were represented in media. Albert Einstein was represented in media wearing white lab coats and using science equipment as those were the proper equipment needed when working safely in the laboratory.

Contradictory to these ideas, a scientist is not only someone
working in a lab but rather a scientist can be anyone who explores, experiments and questions aspects of the world around them. Science can range from food, computer or even social sciences. Therefore, as future educators, there is opportunity to teach the sciences outside the stereotypical confinements of the lab and explore the benefits of teaching science through integrated KLAs such as mathematics or sports.

Ji Yoon Kwon, female, 23 years old, Education Major. permission to use. Description In my drawing, I drew a man wearing a lab coat with messy hair and surrounding him is a flask, magnify glass, books and notebook as well as a whiteboard which has todays lesson on it. The man in my drawing has a resemblance of Albert Einstein because he is the most well-known scientist in the world. Origin: My perception of a scientist was greatly inspired by Albert Einstein because when I was in Primary school during my first science experiment, my teacher I showed us a video clip of Albert Einstein in way that stayed in my mind for a long time. In this video even though it was black and white he explained what he does as a scientist with great passion. Conclusion: During this process of drawing my perception of a scientist and thinking about what they do it made me more aware about the many contributions different scientist do. A Scientist can be an individual who does observations and analysis of plants, chemicals and animals just to name a few.

He is surrounded by flasks and chemicals to represent the stereotype of a ‘scientist’.

Origins

I think most people would have this image when they think of a scientist. Many famous scientists are represented to look this way. I drew most of my inspiration for this image from Albert Einstein. He is often represented to have messy hair, wearing glasses and a lab coat, whilst surrounded by science equipment and chemicals.

Conclusions

Although many people hold this stereotypical belief that this is all a scientist is, being a scientist is much more than working with chemicals and wearing a lab coat. Science is present in almost everything we do. Whether we are studying or observing, we all draw on elements of science to come to a conclusion. A scientist can simply be anyone who observes, explores, discovers and questions the world around them.

My drawing includes a female scientist who is studying chemistry. I drew my scientist as a female because I think it is important that we celebrate the achievements of female scientist especially considering that a while ago a female scientist was a foreign concept. The features I included in my drawing are quiet stereotypical, they are based off of the main things I learnt about science in high school, for example the science goggles and the closed in shoes as well as some of the test tubes in the drawing. The biggest connection to real scientists in my drawing is the crazy hair which links to Einstein, as well as this, my drawing includes the classic lab coat which scientists wear. My drawing also includes a notebook which the scientist has recorded her research on, this is the most important aspect of the photo because scientists are known for their research and dedication to their studies and experiments.

Description: My drawing is of a male scientist who is in their mid 40's. It is very stereotypical, the way scientists are depicted in most movies and fiction books. He is in his lab surrounded by his lab equipment which consists of an lab rat.

Origin:
It is very sad that the first image i had on a scientist was what i would imagine Frankenstein's maker to look like but this is unfortunately true. Although the picture i drew is a more mild version of this scientist, he is nonetheless based on images of scientists in movies and books that i have come across in contemporary culture.

Conclusion:
This activity has brought me to a realisation that despite knowing of the many contributions of scientists to our community, it is so easy to revert to thinking of them as mad middle aged men in lab coats who spend all day torturing animals. This view is very limited and stereotypical but unfortunately widespread. Scientists are crucial members of our community without whom we would not have most of the luxuries we have today, such as vaccines and cures to disease!

Description:

My drawing is of a young adult male who recently completed his masters in agricultural science, hence he is a plant scientist. In my drawing my scientist is performing an experiment on a type of weed, known as the velvet leaf. My scientist has funky hair, with huge square glasses and is wearing an oversized lab coat. This is to portray the view of a curious scientist who’s always keen to make new discoveries. I have also drawn some chemical experiments being conducted within the different sized lab tubes to show an aspect of chemistry.

Origin:

The first thing that came to my mind when I thought of scientists was someone that is always curious and eager in making new discoveries with chemicals and plants. The representation of the scientist I drew was more constructed on the stereotypical perception of scientists rather than scientists in their realest selves. I was also inspired by Albert Einstein himself, hence I drew my scientist with crazy hair, wearing spectacles and a lab coat, my scientist is also surrounded by science equipment’s, plant; weed, chemicals etc. just like how Einstein would conduct his experiments.

Conclusion:

The concepts presented above do reflect certain aspect of science, however none of them offers a full representation, because science has a variety of facets. Science is also a practice of discovery that let us to connect unique facts into clear and broad understandings of the natural world. Science is beneficial; the knowledge created by science is prevalent and dependable. It can be used to progress new technologies, handle diseases and deal with other various issues.

They are in a laboratory wearing lab coats with a serious expression on their faces. Working together, they are cloning a dog. The reason I drew scientists cloning a dog was because there have been many ethical issues raised about cloning which has caused so much hype in the media.

Conclusion:

This task made me realise the contribution scientists have made in our society. I drew lab tools like flasks, test tubes, bunsen burner on a table and safety wears like gloves, closed shoes, etc, this just came to my thought at first when I thought of a scientist, because to me lab tools and safety wears (things listed above) are very important inside the laboratory and resembles scientists.

Origin

The origin of my drawing was from my high school chemistry class. I was taught that as soon as I get in the lab, safety was the most important thing to be aware all the time. That is why I drew safety rule sheet on the wall and a shower faucet as well.

Conclusion

After this drawing activity I have realized that I had narrow outlook on scientists just thinking about the stereotype scientists where they always experiment things with chemicals in test tubes and flasks. Hence, scientists are not always about experimenting new things in the lab, but they have different roles in different field of studies.

Permission to useDescription
I've drawn my friend who has her masters in science and is a high school science teacher. She's teaching in the drawing about cell biology on a whiteboard.

Origin
She's one of the only people i know who's job consists of namely science. Whilst many peoples drawings and ideas consist of people in lab coats and chemicals in beakers and tubes, i know that science in the real world is far more varied across fields and industries.

Conclusion
Scientists do a great deal for our way of life, our environment (good and bad), and our future. And like all people, they need passionate science teachers to inspire them to pursue careers and work in science to contribute to the world for the better.

Jarod, 21, male, Bachelor of International Studies with German major, I like long, romantic strolls to the bottle-o.

Permission to use.
My drawing is (at least it's meant to be) of a person wearing a spacesuit and helmet- a cosmonaut. The character has recently returned from a voyage outside the atmosphere, as evidenced by the raised fist.

Origin
This person is most likely Valentina Tereshkova, or Yury Gagarin - the first woman and man in space respectively.

Conclusion
I tried to emphasise the fact that not all scientists wear white coats (some wear white spacesuits), and that a lot of the most important scientific work takes place outside of the laboratory
