Gender: Joe Jackson "Real Men"

Joe Jackson's "Real Men" is a perfect example of the theme of gender. Jackson sings about all the differences between genders in the late 90's and what it means to be a male in today's 21st century. He says the role of men is changing in society from what it used to be. He also talks about how today people are sometimes unsure of their sexuality and how those people can relate to both genders rather than only one. This song is really about how masculinity is conflicted today and how gender no longer defines who people are.

Freedom: Gucci Mane "First Day Out Tha Feds"

He just got out of the jail and is now free to do whatever he wants. The whole point is that he has so much freedom now after being in federal prison. He can spend money on whatever he wants. He has the freedom to talk to all the girls that he can. He loves this freedom so much that he will never do anything stupid to go to jail ever again. Freedom comes at a price for him tho. He says that he gets death threats all that time now that's normal for him. He had dream that some killers came into his room and he killed them. Even with all this freedom he still has people gunning for him.

Naturalism: 2012

This movie is a perfect example of naturalism. Earth's people are unaware that the planet has an expiration date. Scientists try to warn everyone but there's nothing that they can do. Civilization is going to end and there's no trying to stop it because it's out of everyone's hands. They realize that this is out of human control so they prepare for it by making a huge ship that survivals can go on. Only the most important world leaders and wealthiest people can go on this ship with some middle class survivors on this ship.

Community: The Office

"The Office" is a perfect example of the community theme. All of the employees bond through roasting each other. They are all able to laugh at each other's expenses which really shows the closeness of the Dunder Mifflin crew. Throughout the show, the employees overcome challenges and struggles and really form a community. By the final episode, all the characters seem to have formed deep friendships and seem sad that the show is over.

Love: Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You"

The song was originally created from Dolly Parton. She basically wrote about a professional breakup, not a personal one. It was a farewell to her mentor, producer, and duet partner Porter Wagoner. She basically wanted to go solo but it was very hard for her to let go. She developed a lot of love for Porter but knew that going solo she would become a bigger star. Sometimes you have to let go even if you don't want to. It may be because you want to chase your life goal. Love makes us so reluctant to even chase our lifelong goals. Dolly did the smart thing to do but maybe it wasn't the best for her to let go.

"Californication" is a perfect example of the faith theme. Hank makes many mistakes throughout the course of his life and the show. He always finds ways to screw up his personal life with his one true love, Karen. He has many different lustful relationships, but he never loves anyone but Karen and his daughter. He could be happy with a large number of different women but he always remains faithful to his love for Karen.

Essentialism: Moneyball

"Moneyball" is a perfect example of essentialism. Billy Beane, the general manager or GM, for the Oakland Athletics, has to decide what direction he wants the team to move in. His budget is very limited so he must decide which players he can afford. He makes his decisions based on choosing a few qualities that he deems are more important and essential in a baseball player and signs the players that fit the build that he's created.

Truman Burbank is a real life human living in a fake fantasy world. His whole life is part of a TV show, but he is raised to believe that he is normal.
