Neighbourly Murder - the oxymoron makes the reader feel uncomfortable as 'neighbourly' has connotations of friendliness and camaraderie, but 'murder' is a violent word, which makes the whole phrase VERY CONFUSING

Temperate - The word 'temperate' imitates the slow and rhythmic footfalls of the coffin bearers, this invokes a sort of synestesia which adds to the sombre mood of the poem

Blinded - this word shows that the neighbours don't understand what's happened, which represents the Catholic vs. Protestant violence.

Purring/nose - gentle, connotations of happiness, uses a sort of onomatopoeia to set the unease within the reader, but also explains the monotony of the funeral processes.

Somnambulant - gender roles - women are so distraught by their feelings of loss that they cannot process their pain. Unfeeling

What does Heaney propose for victims of sectarian violence? That violence isn't always the answer and that the cycle of violence has to end

Feminists? That women cannot handle their grief

Boyne? - It's a prehistoric site that he wants to have an impact on. Wants a way to 'shout into the void', back to a simpler place and a simpler time.
