Blog One: The Internet Generation

When looking at the current generation there are a few big things that people need to know. Currently the net-gen or the internet generation is hitting the upper levels of education and the system is not ready for it. These students are being taught by “digital immigrants” or the adults of the nation. A result of this is that teachers do not know the language of technology that these students are native to and technology is being stripped form the students in the classroom. Many students feel that they must power down which is another big issue. When told that they must power down students get frustrated. They do not want to sit in a classroom with some teacher standing at the front of the room talking. They want to see things and experience different events which is possible through the use of technology. This service should walk along with education not be pushed aside because people feel like they do not understand it or see a use for it. The last big thing is just that. The fact that technology is not being used enough in classrooms. Now in work environments many jobs expect students to be proficient in technology so why can it not be used more in school. Some schools are now providing laptops or tablets tying to allow students to use technology but also control what technology they are using and how they are using it. Which is definitely the smart thing to do.

Within the article there were two main things that stuck out. One being the idea of the net-gen vs. the digital immigrants. One pro to this idea is the fact that society is moving and changing and through this we can see the speed at which this change is happening. A downside however is the miscommunication or understanding that is taking place because of the major differences in the way the two generations grew up. The net-gen does not strive for knowledge because it is at their fingertips however the older generation wants to know things and is willing to put in the work to discover new information because that is what they had to do. The older generation expects to see the net-gen reading and doing things the old way, however that will not happen. The legacy is another main thing people must think about. Many people thing about just the legacy they leave behind or the future. The older generation things of what they are leaving the world like whereas the net-gen is thinking about how they can change the future. Both groups need to set aside the differences that are dividing them both and realize that they should focus on both legacy and the future. All of this brings me to one question that I hope others will think about to. Why do people not change the school to accommodate for the future while still teaching students about the past in a more interactive and technological way.

Blog Two : The Disconnect

Do students today want to go to school or are they only at school because they are forced to be? This point from the article stuck out to me because as a teacher my students should want to learn and be at school. The problem however comes into play when teachers do not run classrooms the way students learn. For example teachers make students learn independently, give limited information at a time from few sources, and giving the information through reading text books before showing it through videos or sound. Starting with the first example of learning independently as a challenge to educators is seen as the ideas of social media have formed the expectation of communication. Students are now able to communicate with other people at all times over many platforms, so with the constant communication students do not wish to work alone or do as well working on their own. As a result of constant communication the students can absorb large amounts of communication quickly which is why students get bored when their teachers only use one form of accessing information and teaching. Students learn in so many different ways and teachers must change the way they teach their students to incorporate technology and their learning paces. The last example is the way the technology is presented. Students in schools today are used to constant entertainment or action, so the students need to learn in that way. Teachers can not hand them a book and expect them to read and understand every word, however the teachers can give a video or listening activity that the students can use to learn the material. The odds of the situation would lean in favor of the students learning through video than through book because the videos have more action and entertainment than that of a book.

Those ideas from the reading have stuck out to me because teachers are teaching less and less to the students, not on purpose, but through the lack of technology. Schools and educators have been fighting to change and impact students more on the levels that they are comfortable in. One place however, that changes across the board have not been greatly changed is in the way students are tested. Teachers need to begin testing online or through more formative assessments. The current use of summative assessments is overwhelming to students and causes more stress when many times the information can be tested in many other ways. The Ideas behind testing are positive in every way for the student except in the ideas that the student is not as used to standard testing which could be a disservice to them when they go to take the state testing and college entrance testing such as the ACT. Educators need to thing more on how to use technology in the classroom to engage the students and better aid in their education as seen in the examples from the previous paragraph. The question I will leave you with however, is do students today want to come to school or do they only come because they are forced to.

Blog Three: Technology Can Make Students More Intellectual

Students before the technological age learned "just in case" they learned all knowledge they could need to use in the future weather that be math, science, history, or English. All of them could be needed in an Adults life. However now in the age of technology students now learn just in time. they can get any knowledge they need at the click of a button so why do they need to actually learn the information? Why do they need to learn for the long term instead of just for a test or paper. However just in time learning and just in case learning can come together to make a great contemporary learning source. Technology shows new forms of reading, writing, and research which can be formed together to make a better way for students to learn.
Students can learn at their own paces and the new ways of learning can change they way students learn and make them life long learners instead of only temporary banks for information. Technology also lets the students work in groups and collaborate on ideas and new situations. They can make tests and create forms of knowledge checks that have not been invented yet. Technology can do great things for students and their learning. The only question is will they be encouraged to follow these paths and use technology to their advantages. My hope is that the students will quickly learn and be able to do different things with technology to learn and grow. If not limited I believe students will create new and effective ways for themselves to learn and those things will not only effect them but encourage others to learn and enjoy learning at all levels.

Blog Four: Assistive Technology

Students at all levels can have a learning disability however that does not have to define them. Many students can use different types of Assistive Technology to maintain or improve their learning experiences in and out of the classroom. The types of technology can be either high or low tech meaning it could be something low tech like a grip on a pencil or high tech like a text to speech app. Technology is all around the students and should be used to their benefit always! the tech can be used to aid the child with a difficulty they are working to get past or to get them around it to improve the learning they can. Assistive tech can be used on any device or in almost any way. Students who Struggle with reading or writing can use apps that read to them or to aid in taking what the student says and turning it into a paper. with objects that read students can follow along in the text to try to help them in what is going on. Technology is a great tool that can be used not only in any students education but also in the rest of their lives to continue their learning and growth as adaults. The patterns that we set now as parents and teachers regarding the use of technology will be the patterns that cary through to the rest of the students lives. These patterns could be good or bad but no matter what they will be set. So why not try to set good patterns?
One of the major concerns for teachers and parents when incorperating education and technology is the distraction factor. Students today are faced with so many challenges like social media and bullying and constant cominication that technology can get very distracing. When those things can be limited by the school in the classroom then the students can fully focus on the reason they are using the technology in the classroom and hopefully learn the needed matterial this way the students can succed to the best of their abilities and come out of the class with not just another grade but a knowlage. The problem however is that the technology needs to be used correctly for all students but especially for those who need it in order to maintain or advance their learning as a result of a learning defisit whatever that may be for each student.

Blog Five: Digital Citizenship

Schools all over the United States and the world are constantly using technology in and out of the classroom. One thing that needs to be fixed is the idea that the schools need to stop restricting the students use of technology in the classroom and let them use it with conditions. the conditions should not be what they can use but how much. The students will leave school and move into a world that operates off technology. If the technology is removed from the classroom then the students will be learning information they need but have no idea how to apply it to the lives they will lead in the future. Students understand how to use technology by growing up around it but do they know how to use it responsibly? There are many ways to raise student that is responsible with technology and can turn into a responsible citizen. Technology can be used to raise money and to help others in the community that cannot help themself. One big thing that students need to learn is that they need to be safe online and have digital literacy. Schools in America often restrict the things that students can be on or access at school. Students need to learn how to use technology in finding safe websites which have actual information that can't be changed by outside sources. While in school educators can teach students more about technology and how to correctly find and vet sources they want to use in their papers.

In being smart about the sources students use and learning to vet the sources students can use the same applications to evaluate stories they see on their social media to see if it is true. By checking to see if the information is true students limit the chance of spreading rumors and creating issues out of fake news. Through the aid of others educators can learn to be safe online, learn what is real versus fake and how to help students now in school with lessons that will correlate into the real world and into their daily lives. The hope in using technology in education is that students realize and grow up to be great digital citizens for the rest of their lives.
