Two Choices: (1) Illustrate a political cartoon or create a meme that highlights a condition or problem associated with the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. Here are some suggestions: air pollution, conditions of rich people and poor people, dangerous conditions in factories, and crowded conditions in tenements.
(2) Analyze a political cartoon from the industrial revolution. Post the image and be sure you discuss the following: Historic facts about the time period, the intended audience of the image, the image's point-of-view, and the purpose of the image (HIPP).
Use of specific factual information from the text must be evident for a complete score. Post a screenshot of your cartoon or upload it as a jpeg to the Padlet by clicking the plus symbol below. Rank three other posts 1-5 stars

During the Industrial Revolution the conditions of the factory workers were awful. First the amount the men got paid was 10 shillings, women 5 and children 1 for the same amount of work done. normally families needed 5 shillings for housing and the rest was spent on food and clothes. Second, the danger and dirty conditions was deadly: the Spinning Jenny was left without safety guards and with no maintenance. This would lead to fingers being cut off. The final point is the long hours. The workers including childern 6 years of age would put in no less than 12-16 hours a day with little pay and unsafe working conditions.

Cotton and Factories

During the Industrial Revolution, technology started to advance in 1764 and the creation of the spinning jenny was invented. Before cotton machines were invented, the creation of wool and cotton took forever and the economy was increased dramatically. With the start of the machines, next factories became important during the revolution and created a labor system to produce cotton at a steady rate. As technology increased and advantages were made, the increase of workers and people in danger also had increased. Many people were forced to work for these factories and how harmful and dirty these factories were. Not only were people working hard everyday, some peoples bodies were being destroyed by toxins and overuse. These conditions were unsafe and were harsh on many individuals. The artist of this image intended to use young viewers as an audience to inform them of the use of factories and machinery and the young women shown proving that the industrial revolution included young child labor as well as how the machinery was used as years go by. The photo also shows that in order to get cotton, you have to work for it and as years go by more and more changes are made and increased. Overall, this photo proves that factories brought many good things due to the increase of cotton and materials but also lead to poor jobs and harsh work for individuals on a day to day basis.

The working conditions were poor, harsh, and included long working hours. Poor families would need their children to work. The pay was very little but those families needed every penny they could get. Since factories were hungry for workers and the tasks were simple, there was a surge in child labor. These children needed to be getting educated so they could go farther in life than working at a factory which is why we have laws in place now. One pattern I realize in the paintings is the kids faces look sad and you can see the men are dressed nice and relaxing while the children are doing all of the hard work

Wealthy Vs Poor

During the Industrial Revolution in the 1870s there was a time called the Gilded Age. This time in history is where wealthy tycoons, not politicians, held the most political power meaning they could order people of other classes around. The differences between how the rich and the poor were treated is very noticeable. The poor often worked in factories of horrible conditions. Their life expectancy was low, diets were poor, and disease was very prevalent. They lived in horrible housing and worked in small spaces to earn minimum wages that were barely enough to feed themselves let alone their families. Unfortunately this was normal for this time. The image below represents the severity to which poor people were abused. It shows poor-labor workers carrying wealthy people on a boat while the rich does nothing but gloat. It puts into perspective how badly the wealthy treated the poor. The point of view could be from a poor person trying to put the comparison into an image. The point of view could also be from a wealthy person who is compassionate and understanding towards the poor. Or, on the other hand this image could also be seen and meant as mockery, shame, or embarrassment towards the poor. I believe the artist is trying to get across how badly poor people were treated in comparison to the wealthy and that is why they made this image. However, the artist could have also been one of the wealthy, but with bad intentions and made this image to mock the poor people. Many people probably assume this image is dramatized, but for the poor this is probably pretty close to how they really felt they were treated. I think the intended audience is for the ignorant people who were not aware this happened. Overall, this image is a very good demonstration of the inequality the poor people experienced versus the wealthy during the Industrial Revolution.

During the Industrial Revolution the demand for cotton was booming. The steam engine was running off of burnt coal, the manufacturing of cotton was in large demand, and the population was growing and leading to a increase in demand for food and cotton products. In 1787 Edmund Cartwright made it possible to weave cloth to catch up with the spinning of the thread. It was more efficient and brought people to work in factories. Also, in 1782 steam power could be used to spin and weave cotton, which encouraged production. In 1840 Britian imported 366 million pounds of cotton, making cotton Britians most valuable product. At the factories to use all the cotton and produce for the people, workers were forced to stay and work so that cotton could be produced at study rates. Most factory workers came from rural areas, so theu were forced to worl regular hours and repetitive tasks. The book says that "children were often beaten with a rod or whipped to keep them at work." This picture attatched shows children working a cotton factory and it can show the harsh conditions. It can put in perspective the fact of the harsh conditions of factories. Children were abused and adults were too, with more strict working hours and consequences. It demonstrates to people that everyone had to work and earn what they got, and the very high demand of cotton products. The intended audience could be anyone in the city or town that views it, to show what the ocnditions are like in the factory. It can also be shown in history classes to show how life was back then and the everyday life of the people. The point of view could be from someone in the factory wanting to show how bad it is in there or an outside person looking to deomonstrate the working conditions. I can infer this because the picture shows young children working in a place that looks complex for kids to be working at. I can also come to that conclusion because looking back on that time what kind of research is out and all the facts, that the kids were working harsh child labor jobs and in bad conditions. The subject of the photo looks to be that children were working, and it shows that large amount of work they had to do and how it was really harsh.

The Industrial Revolution took place from 1750-1900. During this time numerous advances in technology were made, new goods increased trade, and thousands of jobs became available. Although this was great, it also brought many downfalls including the conditions of these workers. Many of these workers worked in factories meaning they were exposed to harmful toxins such as various metals, dust, and solvents on a daily basis. Alongside the toxins, many of these factories were overpopulated causing poor ventilation. To say these conditions were awful would be an understatement. These workers also got very little money in exchange for their hard work. Men got 10 shillings, women got 5 shillings, and children got 1 shilling. This was barely enough money to cover rent, food, clothes, and the bare necessities. The message the author wants to get across is that these workers, some of them children, worked 12-16 hour shifts each day in horrible conditions and were paid very little while the factory owners just kept getting richer by the minute. The intended audience of this portrait is most likely anyone but specifically the rich because I don't think the rich realized how much better they had it compared to the factory workers. The artist's opinion on the Industrial Revolution is probably irritated and frustrated because his art demonstrates the inequality of the rich and poor and shows the strong advantage and power the rich had.

There was a huge change during the industrial revolution that affected all of society. These changes were technological, socio-economic, and cultural. During this time they used trains as their form of transporting goods and services. This picture is intended to show the loading and preparation that went into loading and getting the trains ready for transportation. This demonstrates how they used laborers to get them to do their work and load the docks of the trains. The purpose of this picture is to show the way that they used kids and forced them to do tasks that kids shouldn't have to do. This brings awareness of the difficulties these children had to face during these times. The living conditions for these kids were next to horrible. At the time their generations started to become overpopulated. This point of view explains and shows how terrible the conditions were for the kids during this time.

During the industrial revolution, the working conditions were very poor. The long hard working hours made it hard for the young kids or people that were working to stay healthy. The employers of these overworked people were in it for the money. They didn't care if the conditions were extremely terrible or hazardous, as long as they were making their money, they were fine. The grueling hours were long and breaks were not allowed. The workers were housed in small confined areas with poor cleaning and poor ventilation. This made it easier to contract diseases and other unhealthy conditions. The heavy exposure to metal caused many lungs issues and polution. This image is shown for the government to realize that these conditions were inhumane. It was also focused towards the employer to show that these circumstances should not be allowed. The imgae is shown from a point-of-view of the people wh are not having to involve themselves in work labor or it could possibly be another worker. This image is used to show the inhumane amount of work the kids or people went through in the industrial revolution. The amount of crazy and unreasonable situations that were pushed into. The conditions should not have been endured during the revolution. Also, we should not continue with these practices.

Factory owners wanted the machines to be running constantly, so children had to work long hours in harsh working conditions. Children were often beaten and whipped to keep them at work. The intended audience of this political cartoon is the government because the author wants the government to put an end to child labor and pass laws prohibiting it. The purpose of the political cartoon is to show the negative aspects of it, and the harm it is doing to these children. The point-of-view and opinion of the image is that child labor is horrible and should never occur. It also shows the detrimental effects it has on kids.

The workers had to worry about fumes, cave-ins, floods, and explosions. Due to this, many of the laborers had destroyed lungs and deformed bodies. Children even worked down in the mines to open up trap doors to help with ventilation, but it proved to be ineffective. Mines deep in the ground were not anywhere near comfortable working conditions. This image could have been used to promote public awareness for a change in the poor conditions. The image shows how dirty and rough the working environment really was. This could have motivated people to demand change and force the government to realize they needed to improve the harsh environment.

The workers had very little rights and were controlled by the rich people that owned the factories. Also, the factories were large, noisy, and crowded with people. This shows how the workers were mistreated and overworked. The richer people had way too much power compared to lower class people.

Today, factory work and manufacturing tends to be seen as a dangerous job that is usually only done by strong, tough individuals who lack the skills or education needed for other jobs. However, during the industrial revolution in Britain, the view of factory work was much different. During this time period, jobs were very limited. While people had some options, the main options were that if you lived in the countryside, you farmed, and if you lived in a city, you ran a business or worked for a business. A new kind of business was created during the industrial revolution, the factory. Due to an increasing population as well as the advent of new technologies and practices, the need for products and goods grew rapidly, but so did the ability to meet those demands. In Britain, factories started popping up in well-populated areas with access to rivers or streams (many such locations existed in Britain) because factories needed people and something to power their machines. These factories became numerous and efficient enough that their owners got greedy. They wanted to sell their goods all over the world, but this would require a tremendous amount of labor. Men and women, young and old, as shown in the cartoon, were pulled into the factories. They were forced to work all day for little pay. Since the factory was still new, laws and regulations had not been passed to protect the workers. Due to long hours and poor conditions, workers were prone to exhaustion. Because the owners had not wanted to 'waste' money, they took few if any safety precautions, leading to many gruesome accidents for the workers. Over time, laws and regulations were introduced that limited the time one could work, defined a minimum wage, and made safety precautions mandatory. Though nowadays, these regulations prevent workers from experiencing the terrible conditions workers of the industrial revolution faced, it must be understood that workers back then had no hope. If the owner of the factory chose to neglect them, the only thing they could do about it was to leave, but for some, this wasn't even an option. Because as factories began to grow in number, they became the only available job in some areas, so the choice was either the factory or starvation for some people. This was not just the case for men either. The cartoon from the 1850s below shows that women, the elderly, the weak and exhausted were all subjected to the same universal suffering. One thing this cartoon leaves out is children. Child labor was rampant during the industrial revolution, and they too were expected to work the same long hours for even less pay, barely pennies. As it can be seen, the industrial revolution caused universal suffering, suffering for everyone involved, with the exception of the owners, who became rich off the work of others.

Historical Context: Above^
Intended Audience: Factory workers during the industrial revolution and/or the general population.
Purpose: To show that many different types of people were affected by harsh factory conditions.
Point of View: The artist was critical of the conditions imposed by the factory owners. This is demonstrated by their depiction of the tycoon as fat, grotesque, and more cartoon-like. Whereas the workers are more realistic and portrayed as captives, or victims, of the tycoon's harsh conditions and oppression.

During the Industrial Revolution, child labor was a big problem. Child labor has been practiced throughout history. This picture represents child labor, because child labor came with abusive conditions and long working hours. Working children were also not aloud to attend school. The purpose of this picture is to show how children were abused and that putting children to work is wrong.

The conditions of the rich and the poor during the Industrial Revolution were drastically different. Poor citizens would work hard in the factories while the rich would live a fabulous life full of riches and beauty.

ART BY: Gracelynn Bryant

Context: Children made up more than 60% of the workforce in British textile mills in 1788. Children were employed by factory, mill, and mine owners because they were physically small and could fit in tight spaces around factory machinery and in mine tunnels. They were paid even less than adults. They were also thought to be easier to monitor than adult workers because they were obedient and easy to frighten and punish.
Audience: This was most likely intended to show parents the real suffering that children go through. The children's entrapment resulted in a rebellion to stop the labor. It also clearly demonstrates that the children are being manipulated by a powerful person over whom they have little influence.
Purpose: The aim of this cartoon is to show how easily children can be coerced into labor work and receive fewer benefits than the average person. It also demonstrates that exploiting children's control is unethical.
Point of View: Children are being guided into poor demonstrations, according to the author. He probably despises the concept of child labor and anything associated with it.
