As the war engulfed the continent, the Allies conquered Kamerun (now Cameroon) and German South-West Africa (now Namibia). Their campaign against German East Africa (now Tanzania) would be a different story. After bombing the capital of Dar-es-Salaam in early August, British forces from India planned an amphibious invasion of the coastal city of Tanga. But when German commander Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck heard of the impending attack, he moved his troops there and was able to easily repulse the ill-prepared Indian troops. The victory fueled Lettow-Vorbeck’s brutal but successful guerrilla campaign in East Africa, which did not end until November 25, 1918 — two weeks after the armistice was signed.
