1. "I struggled to reason off the nervousness which had dominion over me. I endeavored to believe that much, if not all of what I felt, was due to the bewildering influence of the gloomy furniture of the room...which, tortured into motion by the breath of a rising tempest." After placing Madeline in the dungeon, he begins experiencing many different emotions and feelings. The quote values feelings over intuition.
2. Shaking this off with a gasp and a struggle, I uplifted myself upon the pillows, and, peering earnestly within the intense darkness of the chamber, harkened--I know not why, except that an instinctive spirit prompted me." The quote displays the idea of the supernatural. The character may be experiencing the spirit of Madeline or being taken over by his own imagination.

1. "I had no desire to oppose what I regarded as at best but a harmless, and by no means an unnatural, precaution." This quote shows that he values his feelings over intuition.
2. "Having deposited our mournful burden upon tressels within this region of horror, we partially turned aside the yet unscrewed lid of the coffin, and looked upon the face of the tenant." This quote relates to the way the tragic events lead to a strange outcome as in had supernatural events in the plot and is often bizarre.

The narrator believed that the house had a mind of it’s own and that it had a strong influence on what had become of Roderick Usher and his family. He talks about how they discussed books together which were about Ververt et chartreuse and satyrs and Aegipans, which were about mysticism, magic, horror, the arts, sciences and etc. One evening, Roderick Usher informs him that his sister Madeline has died, Roderick also informs him that his sister had a medical condition which piqued doctor’s interests.Roderick Usher was scared that they would take his sister’s corpse away and experiment on it so he asked if the narrator could help him in the entombment of Madeline.
The narrator learned that they were twins and he recalled that in the beginning he’d seen a striking similitude between the both of them. Days passed by, and Roderick’s mental illness got worse, he wasn’t the same anymore and most days he’d be roaming from chamber to chamber, and some days he’d gaze upon nothing for hours with as if he was listening for some imaginary sound. The narrator started to feel that Roderick’s superstitions were becoming his own, and he could no longer sleep.
