The particle theory of matter consists of very small particles that are moving in a continuous state of motion. The amount the particles move is determined by the energy they have and the relationship they share with other particles. These particles may atoms, ions or molecules. Particle theory helps us explain how the particles in a particular type of matter are moving. In a solid, the particles are compacted tightly together to give it a definite shape. A liquid flows freely and contains a volume that is constant. A gas expands to fill in any shape that is available. Arav
