Poe is innocent due to his state of mind. Poe is obviously insane and can't control himself. He even said he could "hear things in hell", which shows that he has seen a lot and is mentally scarred. Poe should go to therapy, not jail. If he goes to jail, he will either kill someone in jail or kill someone when he gets out. I believe Poe was not to blame for his actions, instead it was the old man himself. How could Poe do such a thing to the old man even though in the text it says that he loved him. Even though he says he had planned it out, he has been known to act out of the ordinary because of his mental debilitation.
