I actually took philosophy my freshman year of college (and even considered changing my major to it haha) and it gave me a really strong background to understand what the book was talking about in terms of how philosophies support teaching methods. It's interesting to think that there are many different approaches to education depending on one's own philosophy.

One of my favorite portions of the class was learning about the pioneers of education. In particular, I enjoyed reading about Maria Montessori. I actually attended a Montessori school from preschool until middle school and I have a friend who is currently working as a teacher assistant at a Montessori school near my hometown. Reading about her ideas and methods was crazy because I was able to compare what the book was talking about to my personal childhood experiences. I never understood the significance of the "prepared environment" in terms of my own development until I was able to see it in a separate sphere from my own experience.

I loved the Becoming A Teacher Advocate paper! I was able to learn about the history of our education system, as well as the multiple effects it has on our society. This paper made me realize that what we are taught in school truly plays a part in the members of society we become. My reform of implementing a personal finance course across the nation as a graduation requirement led me to research the benefits this will provide for our larger society. It also brought to light the importance of educational equity, as I learned not all students come from equal backgrounds.

The Foundations of Education textbook we used throughout the semester provided me with an immense amount of new information. One of the things that stood out to me the most when going through the chapters was how much of an influence historical figures still have on the education system today. When working with the philosophies of education, it was interesting to learn about past individuals that had a strong feeling toward the way school should be taught. Looking back on how I have progressed through the education system, I can see how past principles are still in effect today. This was very interesting to me and I hope that it continues this way.

Learning about the importance of equity is something I will take with me from EDUC 3200. I was unaware of what this word fully meant before taking this course. Applying this term to the education system is very important in ensuring all students are treated equally. We can't control family backgrounds students come from, but we can control the education they receive when coming to school. All students should be given the chance to gain equal knowledge and apply their individual skills. By creating equity within the school system, we will be able to live closer in the outside world.

I'm best suited to be a progressive teacher.

Politically speaking, I'm fairly "right wing' and I hate the idea of teachers pushing political views on children. That being said, I think that an excessively liberal approach to education is the most effective; I would hope my students would go on to share similar views as I do, but the important thing is that as a teacher I teach students HOW to think, not WHAT to think. This is best done in a liberal/progressive manner, catering to students' individual needs and interests.

The biggest eye opener for me was our Teacher Advocacy Paper. I always knew there was a difference between equity and equality, but this assignment really drove that idea home for me. Additionally, I obviosuly felt strongly about the issue I advocated for, but I didn't realize how bias our education system was in our modern society until I dug deeper. I believe that has given me a much deeper appreciation for teachers who teach in a culturally responsible manner, as well as minority students who regularly get underrepresented.

This paper really pushed me to dive deep into the material and I was shocked by how much I learned. Due to this paper, I now have a broader understanding of the history of schools, the purpose they serve, different philosophies, and how important it is to provide equity to all students.

While I've had some struggles with perfectionism with my BTA paper, it was really rewarding to see all of the positive feedback I've received from Dr. Harris. The papers also gave me a great opportunity to learn about the purpose of U.S Education in public schools and the philosophies of U.S Education as well too!
