The follow year, he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives and was elected to represent District 6. When Trump got elected, he was a vocal supporter. He supported Trump's tax-reform bill and replacement of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In 2018, DeSantis was running for governor of Florida and won against Democrat Andrew Gillum. DeSantis took office in 2019, and is currently running for reelection.

1. DeSantis has invested a lot of money to combat climate change. DeSantis has championed a program to funnel hundreds of millions of dollars to communities across the state to help them prepare for the sea level rise and worse floods that result from climate change. The Little River area has received more than $25 million in state funds. DeSantis has created a new approach to climate change by spending money to adapt to a changing climate instead of addressing the root causes of climate change such as greenhouse gas emission.
2. Hurricane Ian hit Florida on September 28 this year. DeSantis has worked toward recovering from Hurricane Ian. Governor Ron DeSantis has been traveling to areas impacted by Hurricane Ian and making major announcements related to the recovery process following the disaster. The Governor announced funding for workforce education programs for high-demand fields including emergency management, health care, law enforcement and education. Governor DeSantis has developed a state-led housing mission to supplement direct temporary housing. In addition, 500 Starlink Units have been distributed to businesses and responders in impacted communities to provide internet connection.
3. Governor Ron DeSantis is working to promote education and protect the environment. He signed the Freedom First budget for Fiscal Year 2022-2023 which prioritizes the freedoms of Floridians to live, work, and have successful businesses in the state. The budget totals $109.9 billion and includes a record $1.24 billion in tax relief for Floridians. It gives Floridians the freedom to use their incomes to support their families, instead of supporting the government. This budget also includes a gas tax holiday that lowers the price of gas in Florida by 25.3¢ and will save Floridians $200 million and a sales tax holiday on diapers and baby clothes for one year, providing $120 million in tax relief.

Position of Ron DeSantis (Emily Lee)

Ron DeSantis is fighting for Florida Governor. Has served in this position since 2019 and is currently running for reelection. Primary responsibilities of the governor include: the enforcement of state laws, requesting interpretations from the Florida Supreme Court on constitutional subjects, approving or vetoing bills passed by the state legislature, drafting a balanced budget to submit to the legislature, granting pardons (with the exception of impeachment), and convening legislature. The governor also has the ability to veto bills. DeSantis will use this position to give more funding to communities that have been impacted the most from the hurricane. He will also continue to fight for access to education and what type of education is taught in school. He will ban schools from teaching the critical race theory because he doesn't believe that schools should teach kids to hate our country or to hate each other. He wants to protect workers against the hostile work environment that is created when large corporations force their employees to endure CRT-inspired training and indoctrination. Furthermore, he will fight for the W.O.K.E Act which attempts to erase sensitive discussions and erase the history and life experiences of black people, LGBTQ folks, women, and other people of color who have struggled to achieve racial justice.

What do the polls between Charlie Christ and Ron DeSantis show? Who is likely to win? (Ayesha)

Based on the polls DeSantis is most likely to win because of his audience being mostly Republican and Florida upholding a reputation of trending with Rebulicans in the last few years with the former President Trump election. According to a poll released by the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab, DeSantis is ahead of Crist by 14% points. Less than 1% of those surveyed said they would vote for someone else, and 4% were undecided or refused to answer.

If your group could endorse a candidate, which candidate would it be and why? (Emily Lee)

If my group could endorse a candidate, we would endorse Charlie Christ because he is doing more things to solve issues in Florida. The main issue is gun violence and Christ is enforcing gun rights by creating strict gun law, stronger background texts, and reporting lost or stolen guns. On the other hand, Ron DeSantis doesn't mention much about gun control in his debate. In the issue of climate change, we don't really agree with DeSantis because we feel like reducing the about of greenhouse gas emission along with adapting to a changing climate is the best solution. If Christ get's elected as governor, defend productive freedom, clean water, and stricter gun laws.

What are the similarities and differences between the NY Governor election and this election? (Ayesha)

The differences between these two Governor elections are the strategies both states parties are using to gain the vote of their party. In NY both Governors are using the media and advertisements to gain their states vote while in the other hand Crist is using "relation organization", where he's paying people to talk to their friends, family and neighbors about his campaign. The reaoning behind this strategy is so there'd be no need to send out volunteers and campaign staffers to have conversations with strangers, but instead of relational organizing which pays organizers or volunteers to have more natural, free-flowing political discussions with their acquaintances. Crist's campaign in coordination with the Florida Democratic Party is working with Relentless, a firm formed by a group of former Ossoff campaign staffers.
