"I did think of Bean, but I was wishing she'd never sent for me, wishing I'd never come."

This quote gives us a look at the closest thing there is to humanity in this book, Spaz's sense of regret and subconscious need to shift the blame to someone other than him. Its the closest we get to seeing him in his most vulnerable state, hating the world and everything but knowing its his fault he was there without wanting to acknowledge it.

"'You were scared and ran. So what?"

This quote is a great contrast between Ryter and Spaz. With Spaz we see negativity and sorrow, especially in this chapter, but with Ryter we see optimism and a bright outlook on life. Throughout the story we see him act with a grin, or try to talk down a situation that could cost him his life with no idea if it would work, which all comes back to the idea that he look at life with a hopeful mind.

"All I can feel is the need to see Bean. Be alive, I'm thinking, please be alive. I stayed alive for you. Now you stay alive for me."

Another glimpse into Spaz's humanity, this quote shows us what gives him a drive to succeed. Loyalty and compassion. He's made this journey for Bean's sake, he does everything in chapter 9 and on because he wants to be there for her, not for himself. The energy that keeps him from breaking down after the first issue is his love for family, even if they're not related.

" I want to tell her how brave she is, how perfect, but something inside won't let me speak."

The quote is a third look at what makes Spaz human, his admiration for others. When he sees someone that he thought was nothing more than a pretty face and smart mouth do something like stand and stay her ground during the fight between the Queen and Vida Bleek, he admires her bravery. Maybe he does this because he feels like he has to, or because he doesn't want to acknowledge his own cowardice any more. All we know is that his natural admiration to the brave is another point of actual humanity in Spaz.

"That's my point, silly. Because you're not a nobody. You're important enough to attract the attention of all those powerful people: Billy Bizmo, Lotti Getts, Vida Bleek. Why is that?"

This quote gives the reader a new concept to consider. It introduces the idea that Spaz has more importance than we know about, that he has connections to someone or something that makes him big enough for leaders of the Urb to know about him and follow his journey. At the time, there are thousands of reasons to think of, but as the story is progressed and we learn more, we find out he has such a tremendous presence in the Urb because he is the son of Billy Bizmo. That, in combination with the quote, explains a lot about why he has survived so far despite being a "deef" as he says.
