Accounts payables result when a person or company purchases items or services, or incurs expenses, and does so "on account" - with the understanding that a bill will be produced and paid at a later date, rather than the goods or services being paid for immediately in cash. These sums are considered liabilities. For example, let's say that The Awesome Socks club hired a consultant to help them explore their options for a new warehouse to expand their production. That consultant would analyze Awesome Socks' options, and advise them, as they were hired to do. An invoice would be sent to Awesome Socks, and would be logged as a credit to Accounts Payable, and a debit to Consulting Expenses.

A Note Payable is a formal promissory note that legally obliges a company to pay a set sum on or by a set date, usually also with interest. It is still considered a liability. If, for example, that consultant advised that it was more cost effective to expand the current warehouse through construction efforts, rather than buying a larger warehouse, Awesome Socks might approach a bank for a loan to cover construction costs. That loan would have a promissory note, a scheduled plan for repayment, and the money borrowed would accrue interest owed to the bank along with the amount borrowed.

Sources:

https://www.accountingcoach.com/blog/notes-payable-accounts-payable

https://www.wallstreetmojo.com/accounts-payable-vs-notes-payable/

Wild, J and Shaw K (2021).

There are several differences between accounts payables and notes payables. Accounts payables are typically short term liabilities that involve purchasing from suppliers or vendors. Notes payables are also liabilities however, they tend to be longer in term and involve obtaining financing from financial institutions or credit companies.

One of the key differences between accounts payable and notes payable is a note payable is longer term in nature and involves a promissory note. The promissory note typically includes a repayment schedule for both the loan principal and interest.

An example of an accounts payable expense would be a retail business purchasing next seasons hockey equipment inventory from a supplier on credit. The supplier will invoice the business for the expense in the future. An example of a notes payable is a business purchases a new skate sharpening machine and obtains a promissory note from a bank to pay the manufacture for the equipment. The promissory note contractual term involves repaying the principal plus interest over a 36 month period.

source:

https://tipalti.com/accounts-payable-hub/accounts-payable-vs-notes-payable/#:~:text=Accounts%20payable%20involves%20recording%20and,financial%20institutions%20and%20credit%20companies.

Wild, J and Shaw K (2021).

A note payable is a liability account where a customer or borrower has a written promissory note to repay a seller at a future time. These are long-term liabilities and is a promise to repay a seller. However, this is bigger than a promise, as the promissory note is a formal contract and requires interest sometimes. Notes payable also typically require an agreement with a bank or other financial institution. To illustrate, lets say Company A wants to expand its operations but lacks the current funds to do so. They go to the bank and get a $100,000 loan and come up with a payment plan to repay the loan within 4 years. This would be put on a notes payable account, because Company A signed a promissory note agreeing to the bank's conditions and repayment schedule.

On the other hand, an accounts payable is a promise to pay a seller at a later date for services or goods received but not yet paid for. These come from purchases made on credit, are a liability, and are typically short-term. For example, Company A hires Company B to provide an IT service for a month, and they will be paid $5,000 at the end of the month. This $5000 would be put on account payable, as the company was a responsibility to pay this amount due to receiving a service.

Note payable and account payable differ due to level of commitment and time. Unlike a note payable, an account payable does not come with a legal or binding contract, nor does it require making agreements with other financial institutions such as a bank. These are obligations a company owes, and are typically short term. Note payable accounts, however, usually require interest and have a contract agreement that usually details repayment plans. These are more than a simple promise, and they can be long or short-term. Furthermore, note payable accounts

can impact a business more than an account payable can typically.

SOURCES:

https://www.allianz-trade.com/en_US/insights/accounts-payable-vs-notes-payable.html#:~:text=Notes%20payable%3A%20Essentially%20a%20written,companies%2C%20or%20other%20financial%20institutions.

The Q4 2022 net income for Nike is was about 1.44 billion dollars. It seems that it dropped due to Covid-19 negatively impacting the company and decreasing its sales. Furthermore, lockdowns in China hurt some of Nike's business and caused this drop.

McDonald's net income for Q4 in 2022 was about 1.9 billion. McDonalds did well this year, exceeding expected revenue, as higher prices with higher demand did the company well. The success of the "McRib" marketing campaign also helped McDonalds do well in 2022.

Lastly, Tesla's Q4 2022 net income was 3.7 billion.

Notes payable result from a promissory note that requires the buyer to pay a set amount to the seller by a certain date. It usually is a long term payout and lasts over 12 months, but can be short term too. An example of this would be if a small company borrowing money from a bank. The bank then will require the company to sign a formal agreement, a note, to pay back the money to the bank with a certain annual interest rate. The company then puts the loan in its general ledger account, in notes payable.

Accounts Payable refers to the sum that a business is obligated to pay to its suppliers for goods acquired or services received on credit. Typically, accounts payable is short term in which the company expects a repay within one year. An example of accounts payable occurs when a company will send a purchase order to a supplier who is in need of goods. When the supplier issues the goods it delivers a sales invoice that the amount and terms due within typically 30 days. After the purchase, the company records the purchase in accounts payable.

Both notes payable and accounts payable are outstanding, but are distinguished by the presence or absence of a note and the due date. Whereas notes payable involve formal borrowing, accounts payable represent short-term obligations arising from normal business activities.

Note Payable is a formal written agreement to repay a specific amount of money by a certain date, typically with interest. This type of liability arises when a company borrows funds from a lender, often in the form of a promissory note.

A note payable involves a formal commitment in writing to repay a specified amount on a future date, essentially constituting a loan agreement between a borrower and a lender. An example of this would be if a company borrows $10,000 from a bank, agreeing to repay the sum with a 5% interest rate in one year, it is recorded as a note payable.

On the other hand, accounts payable denote the short-term commitments a company has for goods and services received on credit. This reflects the money a company owes its suppliers or vendors for goods or services received but still needs to be paid for. An example of this would be if a company acquires $5,000 worth of inventory on credit from a supplier, the $5,000 is recorded as accounts payable until the company makes that payment.

The difference between notes payable and accounts payable is clearly seen when examining the definitions of both. Accounts payable involves only short-term liabilities resulting from the credit purchase of goods/services. These short-term liabilities are also non-collateralized, meaning new orders may still be fulfilled. Notes payable involve both long-term and short-term liabilities and are usually funded by banks and other financial institutions. These loans have a specific due date as well as a predetermined repayment schedule.
