Students may have "Lost out on learning" during this pandemic, but every teacher within this district has done their absolute best to make sure their students are still learning what they need to. Standards were still trying to be met and worked on. The rough year we have had should not be a punishment for students by adding an extra month. These students have adapted to a learning style that requires a lot of self motivation on their part, especially at the secondary level. Students are feeling the effects and the toll that virtual learning has taken on them. Sending them back a month early, is going to take an even bigger toll on them and they are going to get burnt out sooner. Those students who are already struggling and burnt out at this point in the year, need that summer vacation to wind down. Those students who are excelling in their studies will continue to do well but are eventually going to feel the effect. So, either way it is looked at, our students need that summer vacation to decompress and work up that motivation again for the upcoming school year. What I have heard is that some students need help after this year. Why not offer to those who need help and not mandate it everyone?

My students this year have made amazing progress while we were online and in the classroom. The pandemic did not slow down their learning. I believe that making kids remain in school longer over their Summer break is not the way to help them. As a teacher, I do not see strong data to support longer school years helping kids. In fact, I have seen data that suggests it can have negative effects on the students or no improvement at all. Longer school years will cause students and teachers to experience burn-out.  Students deserve to be with their families during the Summer. The connections that children can make over the Summer with their families last a lifetime. I know we both understand the importance of family; and schools should not take students away from their Summer traditions. And what about the students that do not have that family structure or opportunity? There can be Summer camps at the schools to support these students, taught by school staff that are able to work the Summer. Maybe these programs can get students outdoors. Many students in the community help their families in agriculture or family businesses during the Summer which gives these children structure to build skills upon.

Decisions were made and our kids, teachers, parents and staff suffer the consequences. I have two student with one that will be a senior next year. I imagine a lot of students dropping out, leaving thr district or taking the GED due to these impacting changes. Kids need summer and are already burnt out. Let summer school help those that struggled. I could get with extending the school day by an hour a day (1 school day made up per week), but if you want to make changes, do it next year when it is already scheduled and parents have time. 

If the extension was due to the kids education suffering during covid, I would ask who chose the shorter schedule? Who chose to not have the electives that could be offered online? The kids didnt choose this, so why should they suffer the consequences. Kids mental health was already in question. I think thay anyone under the opinion that lengthening the school year and shortening their summer will help their mental health, is incorrect. Give them their summer. Let them be little.
