Summarization of Current Innovation- Rescue Aid

When chest compressions are performed properly, they can save people who are experiencing cardiac arrest. Many times the first responders who find themselves in this type of emergency situation fail to deliver appropriate compressions. This is often because the compressions are too weak. Researchers have developed Rescue Aid, which is a device that helps those delivering chest compressions ensure that they are delivering compressions at the proper strength and rate. The device is designed to simplify the task by providing visual and auditory aids to the first responder letting them know if they are compressing effectively or not. Sensors within the silicone pad detect the depth of compressions and LEDs light up according to the responders compressions. An internal metronome provides the auditory signal to prompt the responder to the correct frequency. The Rescue Aid device has been tested on dummies, and will be brought to the technology market once further research has been conducted.

1. Availability to general population: What is the likelihood that most bystanders will have this device readily available?
2. Cost: Will the cost of the device make it unaffordable to the general population to have?
3. The device has only been tested on dummies at this point.
4. How is the device powered? Will it require charging, etc? This could pose a problem for the device being charged and ready when the time comes that it is needed.

Opinion with Rationale

It is my opinion that the Rescue Aid device designed to help deliver accurate chest compressions could be a major innovation in medical technology. I can understand the value of this type of device, but I question the actual availability of the device to the general population. Perhaps this device could be paired with AED devices that are often available in locations such as shopping malls, airports, and amusement parks. I do not believe that your average everyday bystander will have this type of device on hand in the event of an emergency. I do believe that the device could be a useful tool for EMS personnel to have on hand to use. I also think that it could be a useful teaching tool for CPR and ACLS classes when teaching the proper depth and rate for effective chest compressions.
