Ringworm spreads in a variety of ways, but all of which require direct contact with the fungus itself. Most commonly, individuals can contract ringworm by coming in contact with an animal or pet that contains the fungus. Another common way that it can be contracted is through a public shower. Fungi, especially ringworm, survive best in wet/damp areas, and when many people walk in and out of public showers, they become the perfect place for transmission and survival.

During a recent study on bovine ringworm, it was found that it moves at a higher temperature and faster rate than the strain that affects humans. The study used real-time PCR for an analysis of the fungal DNA within the cattle. All information was studied microscopically through a hair sample. With the positive results from the hair samples, the group was able to move forward on further studying how the zoonotic strands of ringworm can transfer to humans.
