She embodies the image of self-reliance as she never gave in to social norms, took care of herself. She is strong, smart, and knows what she wants. This is in line with the excerpt as, "Not for nothing one face, one character, one fact, makes much impression on him, and another none." Despite Lizzie living in a world that wasn't fair to women she never let that stop her from speaking her thoughts. "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion." She relied on her own intelligence and wit to achieve her goals, and never let anyone or their prejudice against women stop her from doing what she wanted.

This song is seemingly rooted in Emerson's transcendentalist ideology, with lyrics such as "Don't go change your fold, what happened to be mold, shaking off what we were told, not do your own, Let do this all our way, Can't change the storm of a hurricane" that parallel Emerson's line, "envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse". They both describe breaking free of the restrictions of society and becoming one's own person. This is further demonstrated through the lyrics, "We'll dance to our own beat, won't sing to your melody, We will not care if we're the only ones swimming in the sea, Let's do this all our own way," which reflect Emerson's ideas on self reliance as he states, "And we are now men, and must accept in the highest mind the same transcendent destiny; and not minors and invalids in a protected corner, not cowards fleeing before a revolution, but guides, redeemers, and benefactors, obeying the Almighty effort, and advancing on Chaos and the Dark." He claims that we need to rise above what we have been taught as what we seek is within us, which is similarly stated in the song.

Karl Marx

Karl Marx was a German philosopher with numerous revolutionary ideas that were completely weaponized and misinterpreted in his time. He is often misquoted and misconstrued–not only by his ideological opposition, but his own followers, as well. When reflecting on his work, his ideas were butchered by successive revolutionaries in his time. Marx is often falsely accused of promoting a future utopia, a claim that he is easily cleared of once one reads Marx’s own words. Marx wasn’t against the existence of ‘bourgeoisie,’ nor did he advocate the class’s complete dismantlement or the stripping away of everything they owned. What many revolutions who use him as an icon fail to realize is he believed socialism and communism would evolve from democracy. A society would evolve to a democracy as more people were taken out of poverty, given education and gained more and more say in matters of state and society, a world when everyone is middle-class. This sort of idea can be seen in the systems of welfare, worker protection and universal healthcare in Europe, in which he has had a great influence on.
