American voting requirements at the beginning of our country (17th-18th centuries)(Andraya)

The U.S. Constitution originally left it up to the states to determine what voting requirements would be. Generally states made it to where only white male property owners could vote. Some states also made religious tests to determine if the voter was christian. If they weren't christian they were not allowed to vote. Women and African American men and women were affected by this legislation because it made it to where they were not allowed to vote.

The 15th Amendment gave African American men the right to vote. It said that the right to vote should not be denied because of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. When the 15th Amendment was first introduced it was not very enforced. It did not fully pick up until about a century later. States used things like literacy tests to keep African Americans from voting. Action was taken to make this change because it was unfair to only let white males vote and no one else. Male African Americans were affected by this amendment because it led to the ability for them to vote.
