This usually meant that the dad would be taken into war, and that would leave the mom with the children to tend to, and a house to tend to, and a farm to tend to, and the spot of a father from their lives, seeing how  it was a brutal war, and he probably died.
Children: Kids were derived of a male role model, and in the small case that their dad wasn't taken away from them, then they had it easy.
