Metamorphic rocks are most commonly formed when rock is exposed to high heat or high pressure. Common examples of this type of rock are marble, quartzite, and slate. The rocks do not melt, but they are often flat or folded. Then, these rocks slowly turn into a different type of rock.

Igneous rocks are formed when molten lava cools and hardens. This can happen from the eruption of a volcano or below the Earth's surface. Magma, or lava, develops in these places due to the large amount of heat produced. The shape and texture of an igneous rock will vary based on the way the lava hardens.

Sedimentary rocks are formed from other tinier rocks or minerals compacting over time. They are often found in different bodies of water causing a layered look in the rock. Common examples of this type of rock are limestone and sandstone.
