         <description><![CDATA[<div>Study 1: Memory tested for words from shadowed prose message. A repeated word list in rejected prose message and control words were compared.<br><br>Study 2: Instructions were either preceded or not by the use of the participants name. Whether or not the participant heard the instruction was measured.<br><br>Study 3: Participants were listening to passages that had numbers within occasionally (experimental). Similar messages had no numbers (control). Participants heard either two experimental or one experimental and one control. Participants always shadowed an experimental message but one group was told before they'd be asked questions about content of shadowed message and other told to remember all numbers they could. Mean number of digits in the message and the mean number of digits reported were calculated</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When participant directs attention to message in one ear, rejecting the message in the other ear, almost all verbal content of rejected message is blocked.<br><br>Rejection apparent even when message is repeated multiple times. <br><br>Subjectively important messages such as one's own name can penetrate the block, so we may hear instructions containing our own name even in the rejected message.<br><br>Very difficult to make neutral material important enough to penetrate the block<br><br></div>]]></description>
